On Episode 135 of TheFinalSprint.com Podcast, the most listened to running podcast in North America, I had the pleasure of speaking with 2004 Olympian Kate O’Neill who will be running in her first US Olympic Marathon Trials this weekend in Boston. Kate is the 2008 US Half-Marathon champ and goes into the trials with an impressive debut marathon time of 2 hours 36 minutes and 15 seconds (Chicago, 2007).
In the interview, we talk about her goals and thoughts on the Trials and her preparation at altitude in Mammoth Lakes, CA alongside her Team Running USA teammates Deena Kastor and Ryan Hall. We also talk about fellow Yale Alumnus Frank Shorter and about her blogging for The Final Sprint’s Elite Athlete blog series.
Download the podcast to hear Kate talk about getting used to training at altitude, the similarities of her training to Deena Kastor’s, the possibility of running the 10k in Eugene at the USA Olympic Track & Field Trials and much more!
If your measure of success goes way beyond the mainstream, if you think limits are something to be pushed, if your greatest motivation is doing the impossible, we may have a career for you.
First off, I’d like to thank Adam Jacobs and The Final Sprint for inviting me to take part in this new feature of their website. This is an exciting year for track and field in the US. I think we are going to see amazing performances all year long as we all strive to improve our PRs and make a name for ourselves on the world scene.
The inspirational finishes of the men’s Olympic Marathon Trials in November has set a high standard for the rest of us to reach. In 2004, the US was not able to send a full squad in the men’s 5,000 meters, the women’s 1500 meters, or the women’s 10,000 meters to Athens. That certainly is not going to happen this year. A number of people already have met the standards in every event and many more are preparing to make 2008 into a breakout season. The new rule allowing one person with a “B” standard to qualify for the time will make the Olympic Trials even more exciting as no one can assume that a spot on the team is secure. (Sounds a little bit like the current presidential primary season…)
As we head into the Olympic Trials, new running websites like thefinalsprint.com are adding to the momentum through blogs, podcasts, and footage of races that would not have been taped until the last few years.
The Manchester Road Race Committee will sponsor a speech by Olympic Marathon Champion Frank Shorter on Tuesday, November 20, 2007 at 7 p.m. at Manchester Community College’s SBM Auditorium.
Shorter, an All-American long distance runner at Yale University, won the marathon at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. Four years later, he captured the silver medal in the marathon at the Montreal Olympics.
Shorter, who is widely credited with helping to spark the “running explosion” that has occurred in the United States during the past three decades, is the honorary chairperson of the 71st Manchester Road Race. He is also expected to compete in the annual Thanksgiving Day event. Read the rest of this entry »

In January, Kate finished second and ran a personal best 1:11:47 at the Aramco Half-Marathon in Houston. She continued her success with third places finishes at the Falmouth Road Race in August and the New Haven 20-K in September (where she also set another PR).
In the interview, Kate talks about her mental and physical preparation for Chicago, plans to run in next April’s U.S. Olympic Women’s Marathon Trails in Boston, and why she chose Chicago over other fall marathons (i.e. - New York) for her debut.
Download the podcast to hear Kate discuss these topics, as well as, how Deena Kastor and the other members of Team Running USA in Mammoth Lakes, CA have helped with her approach to the marathon, her views on the role of pacesetters, how cheering fans have confused her with her twin sister Laura when they ran together at Yale, and much more!
