The Spring marathon season nears its conclusion on Sunday with both the Hamburg and Vienna City Marathons.
The Conergy Marathon Hamburg has been one of the most reliable spring marathons in recent years in producing fast times. Indeed, since 2006 men have broken 2:08 in Hamburg six times including Spaniard Julio Rey’s 2:06:52 course record set in 2006. Organizers have announced over 23,000 entrants, including 2006 European champion Ulrike Maisch who hopes to make her nation’s Olympic team by posting a time faster than 2:31:00.
“I believe in the fact that I can run a personal best and hope even for a time of 2:29:00,” said the 31 year-old through a press release.

Canadian Equivalent of Hanson’s-Brooks Running Project
The Hanson’s-Brooks Running Project has its equivalent up in Canada and it’s called Brooks Canada Marathon Project. Husband-and-wife team members Andrew Smith and Tara Quinn-Smith, who won the men’s and women’s Canadian Half Marathon Championships, and other Brooks Canada runners are featured in an article by the Toronto Sun.

Hamburg Marathon Preview
German correspondent Jörg Wenig has written a preview of the Hamburg Marathon for the IAAF. He spotlights Spaniard Julio Rey, who has won the race four tines and Kenyan Wilfred Kigen, who has won three times, as the favorites in the men’s race. Compatriot Ulrike Maisch, the 2006 European Champion, is the favorite in the women’s race. She told Wenig that “I will definitely have to run 2:29 to qualify for the Olympics. But I believe that I can achieve 2:28.”

The sheriff will be back in Frankfurt on Sunday as course record-holder Wilfred Kigen goes for his third straight victory in the German capital at the Dresdner Kleinwort Frankfurt Marathon.
Kigen, a 32 year-old Kenyan from Great Rift Valley city of Eldoret, got his first victory in Frankfurt in 2005, running a then-personal best and current course record of 2:08:29. That victory was a squeaker; he prevailed by just one second over compatriot Jason Mbote. Although he didn’t run as fast last year due to warm and windy conditions, he dominated the race, winning by nearly a minute and a half in 2:09:06.
At Kigen’s last outing over the 42.195 km distance in Hamburg last April, he was involved in another thrilling finish, losing by a single second to former ING New York City Marathon champion, Rodgers Rop. He was, however, rewarded with a new personal best time of 2:07:33.
