Runners to Battle Heat Again in Chicago

chicago marathon logo 2008For the second year in the row runners will have to confront much higher than normal temperatures at the Bank of America Chicago Marathon.

At 7:00 AM CST, one hour before the start, the temperature is 61° (15°C) with 75% humidity. Local forecasters say that the high temperature for the day will reach 81°F (27°C), but that will be in the late afternoon. When the professional men finish just past 10h00, temperatures will be about 68°F (20°C) with 67% humidity, accompanied by bright sunshine.

Organizers had to shut down the race last year when temperatures soared over 80°F, and the race ran out of drinking water. Race director Carey Pinkowski has dramatically beefed up the event’s aid stations to deal with potentially warm weather, and his preparations will definitely be tested today. Making his job that much tougher is the relatively high percentage of first-time marathoners who are attracted to Chicago’s flat course and open embrace of charity groups.

Excellent Weather for Women’s 10-K Could Mean Fast Times, New Record

Section: News & Results, Track & Field, Olympics

lornah-kiplagatNine straight days of bad weather finally lifted here today giving rise to the possibility of fast times in tonight’s women’s 10,000m, the first final on the track of these Olympic Games.

At 22:00 local time, the temperature was 26°C (79°F) with 51% humidity, far better conditions than were anticipated by most of the 32 competitors from 18 nations who are on the start list.

The Olympic Games record is 30:17.49 set by Derartu Tulu of Ethiopia in Sydney in 2000. With athletes like two-time world 10,000m champion Tirunesh Dibaba and multiple world road running record holder Lornah Kiplagat (Pictured) in the field, that record could go. The field is loaded with talent; 13 women have personal best times under 31 minutes.

Haze Smog and Pollution at 2008 Beijing Olympics in ChinaIn advance of tonight’s Opening Ceremony, Beijing remains in the grip of a humid haze so thick that one could barely see the sun over Tiananmen Square this morning (see photo).

This is the third consecutive day that this Olympic host city has seen stifling humidity which has greatly reduced visibility and has left athletes, tourists and members of the media alike sweating profusely. There has not been a blue sky to look at since Tuesday afternoon.

Weather Looking Up for Tomorrow’s Grandma’s Marathon

Posted June 20th, 2008 at 12:07 PM by David Monti

Section: News & Results, Marathons

After two years of unusually high heat and humidity, it appears as if the weather gods may smile on the 32nd running of Grandma’s Marathon and the Garry Bjorklund Half-Marathon here tomorrow.

Of course in Duluth, where it’s jokingly said bad weathermen are sent for punishment, anything can happen, depending on how the wind shifts off of Lake Superior, along whose shores both races are run. Last year, for instance, race day dawned with high temperatures and humidity that dashed many runners’ hopes for Boston or Olympic Trials qualifiers; the next day, the weather changed radically, with temperatures in the upper 50’s (F) and a strong tailwind.

Gebrselassie Hoping for Perfect Race in Dubai

Haile Gebrselassie 2 hours 4 minutes 26 seconds world record real Berlin Marathon 2007Setting a world record is never easy, but it’s particularly difficult in the marathon. Not only must an athlete spend three to four injury-free months training for a single competitive effort, he must have near-perfect conditions: a flat course, excellent pacemaking, ideal weather, and a well-marked and measured course. A little luck doesn’t hurt, either.

Heading into Friday’s Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon,
Haile Gebrselassie is hoping that all of these factors will line up in his favor so he can break his own world standard of 2:04:26 set in Berlin last September. In short, he’s looking for the perfect race.

“The top priority is not the money,” Gebrselassie said referring to the $1 million bonus for a new world record race organizers have on offer. “It’s the race. But the marathon is not an easy event, you cannot predict. Everything is perfect, I hope it will be more perfect for the race.”

Could Tomorrow’s Trials Be The Slowest Race Ever?

Posted November 2nd, 2007 at 6:30 PM by Jimmie R. Markham

Section: News & Results, Marathons

hourglass1.jpgHere’s a look at the U.S. Olympic Trials Men’s Marathon winners since 1968 when a single race determined the composition of the U.S. Olympic Team. The list is sorted from the slowest winning time (George Young’s 2:30:48 at altitude in 1968 in preparation for Mexico City’s altitude) to the fastest winning time (Tony Sandoval’s 2:10:19 in 1980). Tomorrow’s wicked weather (rain with wind speeds of 25 to 35 MPH and gusts of up to 45 MPH) could play a key role in making it the slowest marathon in nearly 40 years:

1968 George Young 2:30:48 Alamosa, CO 08/18/68 (altitude)
1971 Kenny Moore 2:16:49 Eugene, OR 06/06/71
2000 Rod DeHaven 2:15:30 Pittsburgh, PA 05/07/00
1996 Bob Kempainen 2:12:45 Charlotte, NC 02/17/96
1992 Steve Spence 2:12:43 Columbus, OH 04/11/92
1988 Mark Conover 2:12:26 Jersey City, NJ 04/24/88
1976 Frank Shorter 2:11:51 Eugene, OR 05/22/76
1984 Pete Pfitzinger 2:11:43 Buffalo, NY 05/26/84
2004 Alan Culpepper 2:11:42 Birmingham, AL 02/07/04
1980 Tony Sandoval 2:10:19 Buffalo, NY 03/24/80
