The 200-meters was a wide open race for any of the talented sprinters to win in the absence of Tyson Gay. Who would have thought that the race would be so fast that Rodney Martin would put down 19.90 and not make the team even without Gay in the race? Well it certainly happened that way today.
Coming off the turn Shawn Crawford looked like the runner of old as he lead the pack over the first 100 meters of the race. The 2004 Olympic champion held the lead until Walter Dix closed the gap in the final 5 meters to win at the finish line by the slightest of margins.
Wallace Spearmon was deep in the pack coming off the turn and his chances to make the team were not looking good and then he began picking off runners with a massive kick that resulted in a third place finish and the last spot of the 200-meter team heading to Beijing.

After winning the 100-meter Olympic Trials final in 9.68 on Sunday, Tyson Gay is now back to compete in the 200-meters. The reigning 200-meter World Champion jogged easily to victory (20.43) in the preliminaries.
There were not any surprises, as everyone that was expected to move forward, did so tonight. Saturday are the semi and quarterfinal rounds with the finals taking place on Sunday.
Shawn Crawford qualified for the semifinal heat (20.18),along with Xavier Carter (20.86), and Walter Dix (20.66). Wallace Spearmon did not qualify for the 100 meters but then again it’s not his main race either. He hopes to get his ticket to Beijing and challenge Tyson Gay in the 200 meters.

2004 Olympic silver and two-time World Outdoor 100m medalist Lauryn Williams, 2004 Olympic 4×400m gold medalist Sanya Richards, 2004 Olympic silver medalist and two-time World Outdoor 200m champion Allyson Felix and two-time World Outdoor 200m medalist Wallace Spearmon addressed the media at a press conference Thursday held in conjunction with the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials - Track & Field, June 27 - July 6 at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
Below are excerpts from Thursday’s press conference.
Lauryn Williams
I’ve been doing the same things I’ve always been doing before a USA Championship, nothing extraordinary. I’ve been preparing, getting ready for a top peak and a top three finish at Eugene.
It’s pretty nerve-wracking for me, I’ll say. I’d say that there’s a good 8 to 12 girls and anybody’s game. I just hope that I can get out there and get my adrenaline pumping and do what I’ve always done. I’ll work the kinks out during the rounds.

Meet records fell across all event groups, none bigger than Brad Walker’s American record in the pole vault, and Maria Mutola had a historic exit Sunday at the Nike Prefontaine Classic.
The fourth event of USATF’s Visa Championship Series, the Nike Prefontaine Classic drew a meet-record 14,221 fans to Hayward Field, site of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Track & Field June 27-July 6. They were treated to a formidable show, including no fewer than eight meet records and Walker’s AR.
The 2007 world champion, Walker looked magnificent throughout the competition. He had just one miss, at his opening height of 5.70m/18-8.25, then passed to 5.90m/19-4.25, which he cleared on his first attempt and which won the competition for him. Walker then elevated the bar to 6.04m/19-9.75. On his very first attempt, he cleared, brushing the bar just a bit, but leaving it up.

IAAF Tokyo Marathon Preview
The Tokyo Marathon will be held this Sunday, February 18th and it will be doubling as Japan’s Olympic Men’s marathon Trials. A slew of speedy foreign runners has been invited, including Daniel Njenga of Kenya, a 2:06 marathoner. Historically, Japan has been strong in the marathon at the international level, so – with its mix of domestic and foreign talent – this should prove to be a high-octane race.

Haile’s Goal: 2:03 Marathon
Haile Gebrselassie’s goal for the Berlin Marathon this coming Sunday is 2:03:00, which would be an almost inconceivable 4:41 per mile pace. That would be a minute and 55 seconds faster than Paul Tergat’s world record of 2:04:55. Gebrselassie, the world record holder in the 20000m (56:26.0), the 20K (55:48) and the hour run (21.285K), has a PB of 2:05:56 in the marathon which he set at last year’s Berlin Marathon.Read more at: [IAAF]
Gay, Liu, Bested by Spearmon and Robles
Granted, it is a meaningless end-of-season meet, but nobody expects Tyson Gay or Xiang Liu to be beaten in their respective events (100m, 110m hurdles) especially Liu in front of a hometown crowd. But that’s exactly what Wallace Spearmon and Dayron Robles did today at the Shanghai Golden Grand Prix meet. Both Gay and Liu admitted that they hadn’t been training for some time, but they both gave kudos to Spearmon’s and Robles’ outstanding performances. Read more at: [IAAF]
