Goucher to Challenge McGregor at USA 10 Mile Championship in Minnesota

Kara GoucherOrganizers of the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon, which plays host to the 2008 USA Women’s 10 Mile Championship, announced today that Kara Goucher will challenge Katie McGregor for that title on Sunday, Oct. 5., in Minneapolis, Minn.

Goucher is back in training after doubling at the Beijing Olympics in the 5000 and 10,000 meters last month. She made the final in the shorter event, finishing ninth, and placed tenth in the longer event in a personal best 30:55.16. This will be her first 10 mile road race, but at last year’s Great North Run half-marathon in Newcastle, England, she hit the 10 mile mark in an unofficial 50:59 (she won the race in 1:06:57).

Running USA Seeks New CEO

running usa very small horizontal logoRunning USA, a trade group and distance running advocacy organization, is seeking a new chief executive officer. The position, now held by Basil Honikman, will be come vacant after Honikman retires next February. Honikman has held the post since 2000.

According to the job description which was sent to the Race Results Weekly office, the successful candidate will need “to build on the record of excellence and extend the organization’s impact even further throughout the sport.” The CEO will act as the chief spokesperson for Running USA, and be responsible for fund raising and financial oversight and management, amongst many responsibilities listed.

Twin Cities Marathon increases partnership with Team USA Minnesota

twin cities marathon 2007 bannerThe Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon, scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 7 in Minneapolis, announced that they had expanded their partnership with Team USA Minnesota, an Olympic develop training group which is also based in Minneapolis.

Organizers of the event reported that it had increased its financial support for the training group, coached by Dennis Barker, who is also the head cross country and track coach at nearby Augsburg College. In return Team USA Minnesota athletes would increase their involvement in Medtronic TCM events, including the marathon, USA 10 Mile Championships, the TC 5-K and the Medtronic TC 1 Mile.

team usa minnesota logoMembers of Team USA Minnesota, which include Katie McGregor, Carrie Tollefson, Jason Lehmkuhle, Matt Gabrielson, Sara Wells and others, would also participate in the Target Pharmacy Health & Fitness Expo panel discussion during the TCM weekend, Oct. 5-7.

Specific terms of the increased financial support were not disclosed. Team USA Minnesota also receives financial support from Life Time Fitness, its principal sponsor, and and the New York Road Runners, through the USA Distance Project.
