2008 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field: Week 1
The 2008 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field season officially kicks off in fine style this weekend with 38 (count ‘em, 38!) meets throughout the country. The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association has links to all of them on their website. Schedules like this one are truly a track junkie’s dream come true.

ASU Opens Outdoor Season At Home
ASU, the 2008 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Champions, will open their outdoor season at home this weekend at the Baldy Castillo Invitational. Both the men’s team and the women’s team won the NCAA national titles last weekend. The meet will be contested on the Joe Selleh Track at Sun Angel Stadium in Tempe, AZ.

Oregon Host First Meet At Revamped Hayward Field
The University of Oregon’s historic Hayward Field has had an $8 Million facelift in preparation for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials, and now the Ducks want to show her off to the world. Folks will get their first look at the freshly-reminted stadium by hosting the Oregon Preview on Saturday, March 22nd, 2008. Over 550 athletes from throughout the Northwest will be competing in the meet.

McDonnell, McDougal Win Regional Awards in D1 Men’s Cross Country

John McDonnell (Pictured) of Arkansas and Josh McDougal of Liberty lead a select group of coaches and athletes being honored as regional award winners for the Division I men’s cross country season.

The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced today the men’s coaches and athletes of the year for nine Division I regions.

McDonnell, the legendary Arkansas coach who has won 11 NCAA cross country championships, is the South Central Region Men’s Coach of the Year. The USTFCCCA Hall of Famer led the seventh-ranked Razorbacks to their 18th straight regional title.

McDougal is the Southeast Region Men’s Athlete of the Year. The Liberty senior won his third regional title Saturday in Louisville.

Each of the men’s coaches and athletes of the year advanced to Monday’s NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. Mark Wetmore of defending NCAA champion Colorado is the Chick Hislop Mountain Region Men’s Coach of the Year.

Kipyego, Tegen Among Regional Honorees for D1 Women’s Cross Country

Winning never gets old for Sally Kipyego (Pictured) of Texas Tech and Coach Peter Tegen of Stanford. To varying degrees, the same can be said of all the athletes and coaches earning recognition as regional award winners for the Division I women’s cross country season.

The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association today announced the women’s coaches and athletes of the year for nine Division I regions.

Kipyego, a four-time NCAA individual champion in indoor track, outdoor track and cross country, is the Mountain Region Women’s Athlete of the Year. The Texas Tech junior’s undefeated season includes victories at the Big 12 Conference Championship and the Mountain Regional. Kipyego will defend her national title at Monday’s NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships in Terre Haute, Ind.

Tegen’s runners will also be defending a title Monday. Stanford has won the last two NCAA championships and is favored to make it three in a row. The Cardinal won three of the toughest meets of the year – Pre-Nationals, Pacific-10 Conference Championship and the West Regional – and is ranked first in the country.

NCAA Cross Country Championships to Be Broadcast on the Web

Monday’s NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships will be broadcast on the internet, according to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

The meet, one of the most exciting and competitive foot races held in the United States, will be contested at Indiana State University on Monday afternoon. The men’s 10 km race goes off at 12:08 p.m. eastern time followed by the women’s 6 km race at 12:58 p.m.

The broadcast will be produced by CSTV and will run from noon to 1:30 p.m. ET. A link for the broadcast will be available at http://www.ustfccca.org.

Cross Country: Division I Rankings, Women

Stanford maintained its top national ranking by winning a highly competitive Pacific-10 Conference women’s cross country championship race Saturday in Corvallis, Ore. The top-ranked Cardinal defeated three other teams ranked in the top seven to collect its 12th straight conference title.

Stanford received 12 of 13 first-place votes in the Division I women’s poll released today by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Fourth-ranked Princeton claimed the remaining first-place vote.

Cross Country: Division I Rankings, Men

Bolstered by the return of Galen Rupp, Oregon won its second straight Pacific-10 Conference title on Saturday and swept the first-place votes in this week’s Division I men’s cross country poll.

Rupp finished second to teammate Shadrack Kiptoo-Biwott as Oregon scored 55 points to win the Pac-10 title in Corvallis, Ore., defeating Stanford (55) and Cal (70). The Ducks received all 13 votes in the poll released today by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Top-ranked Oregon defends its title at the Pacific-10 Championships as other nationally ranked Division I teams also prepare for conference meets this weekend.

Oregon, the top-rated team in the most recent U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association poll, will be challenged Saturday by eighth-ranked California, No. 14 Stanford, No. 19 UCLA and 25th-ranked Arizona State. The Pac-10 Championships will be held in Corvallis, Ore.

Women’s D-I XC Teams Prepare for Conference Championships

Defending NCAA champion Stanford competes against three other teams ranked in the top 10 nationally at Saturday’s Pacific-10 Conference Cross Country Championships in Corvallis, Ore.

Starting Friday and continuing through Sunday, the top Division I women‚s teams compete in conference meets across the country. The Pac-10 and Big Ten conference meets each feature four teams ranked among the top 10 by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Championships.

The Pac-10 Championships include top-ranked Stanford, No. 2 Oregon, fifth-ranked Arizona State and No. 9 Washington.

Friday’s Big Ten Championships in Columbus, Ohio, matches sixth-ranked Michigan, No. 7 Michigan State, eighth-ranked Minnesota and No. 10 Illinois.

The USTFCCCA Division I polls remain the same this week since there was limited competition nationally as most teams rested for the upcoming conference, regional and national championships. The NCAA Championships will be held Nov. 20 at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Course in Terre Haute

Stanford #1 In 2007 Pre-Season Women’s Cross Country Rankings

Two-time defending NCAA champion Stanford opens the 2007 cross country season ranked first in the country among Division I women’s teams, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced today.

Stanford received nine of the 13 first-place votes in the initial poll. Michigan is ranked second. Third-ranked Colorado received the remaining four first-place votes.

Rounding out the top 10 are No. 4 Arkansas, Wisconsin, Illinois, Arizona State, Minnesota, Providence and Michigan State.

The second 10 consists of Virginia, Florida State, Georgia, Iowa, North Carolina State, Princeton, Duke, Colorado State, Washington and Virginia Tech.

Wisconsin #1 In 2007 Pre-Season Men’s Cross Country Rankings

If the first Division I men’s poll of the season is a reliable indicator; this should be a very interesting cross country season at the national level.

Wisconsin claimed the top spot in the poll released Tuesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The Badgers received five first-place votes to tabulating 379 points.

Second-ranked Colorado picked up four first-place votes. Third-ranked Iona and fourth-ranked Oregon received one and three first-place votes, respectively.

Rounding out the top 10 are Arkansas, Stanford, UTEP, Oklahoma State, Texas and North Carolina State.
