Curtis named Athlete of the Week

Bobby Curtis has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after winning the 2007 Big East Cross Country Championships Saturday at the E.P. `Tom’ Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky.
A senior at Villanova University, Curtis won the men’s 8 km title in a course-record 23 minutes, 8.85 seconds to win the individual title for the second time. He also captured the 2004 crown with a time of 23:26 at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass.

Brad Walker named USATF Athlete of the Week

Brad Walker has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after winning the men’s pole vault at the 2007 World Athletics Final in Stuttgart, Germany.
The reigning World Indoor and Outdoor champion, Walker won the men’s pole vault with his clearance of 5.91 meters/19 feet 5.75 inches, topping the rest of the field by 5 cm. Walker, who owns the top two clearances in the world so far this year, equalled the #3 performance with his winning effort at Stuttgart.
Now in its sixth year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.

Sanya Richards named USATF Athlete of the Week

Sanya Richards has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after winning the women’s 400 meters Sunday at the 2007 ISTAF Meeting in Berlin, Germany to earn her second consecutive share of the Golden League Jackpot.
The 2006 IAAF Athlete of the Year, Richards earned half of the million-dollar jackpot by going undefeated in the women’s 400 in Golden League competition. In the last meet of the series, she streaked to victory in the women’s 400m in a world-leading 49.27 seconds. Richards’ other Golden League wins came in Oslo June 15, Paris July 6, Rome July 13, Zurich September 7 and Brussels last Friday.

Victoria Jordan named USATF Athlete of the Week

Victoria Jordan has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after several outstanding performances at the USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships July 24-29 in Walnut, Calif.
Jordan won set two national records in the young women’s (17-18) age division, on her way to picking up four gold medals. Jordan’s first record came in the prelims of the 200 meter dash, where she finished in 23.24 seconds. That time bettered the previous record of 23.27 set in 2006 by Gabrielle Mayo.
In the 200m finals, Jordan posted a wind-aided time of 22.84 to take the championship. She anchored the Dallas Gold Track Club’s 4×100m relay to a winning time of 44.43, which broke the record of 44.56 set by the same club in 2006.

William Wynne named USATF Athlete of the Week

William Wynne has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after setting a world youth record in the boys’ 400 meter hurdles and earning three medals at the IAAF World Youth Championships held July 11-15 in Ostrava, Czech Republic.
Wynne (Kennesaw, Ga.) sped to a gold medal Sunday in the 400m hurdles with a time of 49.01 seconds. His performance smashed the previous record of 49.86 set by South Africa’s Marnus Kritzinger in 1999. Wynne later ran a leg of the medley relay to pick up his second gold of the meet. Team USA finished in 1 minute 51.34 seconds to edge out Japan by .08. On Thursday, Wynne raced to a silver medal behind teammate Wayne Davis II in the 100m hurdles with a time of 13.44.

FSU’s Walter Dix named USATF Athlete of the Week

Walter Dix has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after winning three national titles, the 100 meters, 200m and 4×100m relay, over the weekend at the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif.
The 2005 NCAA 100m champion and 2006 NCAA Indoor and Outdoor 200m champion, Dix warmed up running the second leg of the winning 4×100m relay (38.60) and then stole the show in winning the men’s 100 meters in a world-leading 9.93 seconds, just .01 behind Ato Boldon’s NCAA record of 9.92. Dix finished out his third appearance in three years at the NCAA Championships by winning the men’s 200m in 20.32. Dix became the first athlete to win the 100m dash, 200m and 4×100 relay in the same NCAA Championships since John Carlos of San Jose State in 1969.

Stuczynski named USATF Athlete of the Week

Jenn Stuczynski has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after becoming the first American woman to clear 16 feet in the pole vault Saturday at the Reebok Grand Prix in New York City, the third stop of USATF’s Visa Championship Series.
Stuczynski’s winning clearance of 4.88 meters/16 feet 0 inches, was her second American record and world leader in two weeks, and extended her lead as the top performer of the Visa Championship Series. She broke Stacy Dragila’s three-year-old American record on May 20 at the adidas Track Classic (4.84m/15-10.5).
Saturday in New York, she had the bar set at 16 feet and took two solid tries that failed. On her third attempt at the height, Stuczynski gave the bar a brush, but it stayed up, giving her the American record, as well as the U.S. all-comers record. Stuczynski currently owns the three highest clearances in the world this year.

Dix named Athlete of the Week by USA Track & Field

Walter Dix has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after setting a collegiate record in the men’s 200 meters Saturday at the NCAA East Regional Championships in Gainesville, Fla.
A three-time NCAA champion, Dix won the men’s 200m in a collegiate-record world-leading time of 19.69 seconds (+0.9mps), easily surpassing the previous record of 19.75 set by Joe DeLoach of Houston in 1988. His time places him sixth on the all-time list and is the seventh fastest performance ever. Dix also won the 100m in 10.05.
