USA Track & Field LogoEugene, Ore., will host the U.S. Olympic Trials in 2008, and the U.S. Outdoor Championships in 2009 and 2011. In between, USATF announced today, the national championship meet will move to Des Moines, Iowa, home of Drake University and the Drake Relays.

“For several years, we have wanted to bring one of our premiere events to Drake Stadium,” USATF CEO Masback said in a prepared statement. “The Drake Relays is truly a community event with phenomenal fan support, and that community spirit shone through in Des Moines’ bid. We look forward to building a very strong partnership with local organizers for what will be an outstanding 2010 USA Outdoor Championships.”

Drake Stadium will get a $15 million renovation for the championships. “We envisioned that the facility would make Drake and Des Moines the Midwest capital of track and field,” Drake President David Maxwell said. “This event is a huge plus not only for Drake but also Des Moines and Iowa as a whole.”

AT&T men’s 200m takes center stage at AT&T USA Outdoor Champs on Jun 21-22

Posted June 14th, 2007 at 5:20 AM by Martin Kennedy

Section: News & Results, Track & Field

2007 AT&T USA Outdoor Track & Field ChampionshipsThe 200 meters has gone from an event considered an afterthought to the most exciting event on the track. Luckily for fans, all the men behind the glam factor in the 200 will take the track at the 2007 AT&T USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, held June 21-22 at Mike Carroll Stadium on the campus of IUPUI.

Tyson Gay ended the 2006 season ranked #1 in the world in the 200, but Wallace Spearmon and Xavier Carter could also make a case for being #1. Throw in Walter Dix of Florida State and 400-meter ubermensch Jeremy Wariner, and the men’s 200 promises to be a tinderbox of excitement.

Wallace SpearmonSpearmon has perhaps the deepest credentials of the group and is considered the favorite by many. The 2005 World Championships silver medalist, Spearmon is the defending U.S. champion and reigning World Cup champion in this event. On September 28 of last year, he became the #3 performer of all-time with his 19.65 performance in Daegu, South Korea.

Podcast 56: KARA GOUCHER

Posted June 8th, 2007 at 2:00 PM by Adam Jacobs

Section: News & Results, Special Features, Interviews, Podcasts

kara goucherEpisode #56 of The Final Sprint Podcast features my interview with Kara Goucher. Last year the former University of Colorado cross country and track star was finally able to get past the injuries that her plagued her for the past several years and went on to have a stellar 2006 season where she ran the year’s fastest, American women’s 3,000m and the second fastest U.S. women’s 10,000m in history.

Now under the tutelage of legendary American marathoner Alberto
Podtrac Player
Salazar, Kara is looking strong as she attempts to capitalize on her momentum at the upcoming USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

podtrac_survey_120x60_v2In the interview, Kara reflects on her 2006 successes, says that she is still focused on breaking 15min in the 5,000m, and discloses that her historic 10,000m time gave her an unexpected interest in possibly racing at the marathon distance (where she could potentially join her husband Adam who is considering running his first marathon at November’s Olympic Trials) but that such a metamorphosis wouldn’t take place until the end of 2008 at the earliest.

She also speaks about starring in Nike’s “Meet the Gouchers” and that although she feels being married to another professional runner is in general a major positive (especially when it comes to support and of course motivation) she also jokes that Adam “Is all over my running business [and training] …at times I am just like ahh, too much!”

Download the podcast to hear Kara discusses these topics, as well as, eating disorders among collegiate athletes, falling in love with her Oregon, and why and how she believes that Coach Salazar has “changed their lives”.
