Podcast 15: Interview with 2007 USA Cross Country Champ Alan Culpepper

Posted February 15th, 2007 at 3:30 PM by Adam Jacobs

Section: Special Features, Interviews, Podcasts

culpepper_cross_2007_1.JPGToday’s podcast features my interview with Alan Culpepper, a 2-time Olympian, who earned his third USA Cross Country Championship with a spectacular come from behind win last weekend in Boulder.

His previous achievements include tying Alberto Salazar for the fastest debut marathon by an American, three U.S.A track titles and a top finish in the 2004 US Olympic Trials marathon. During the interview Alan discusses how he bounced back from a disappointing 2006 and defeated such a talented (and largely younger) field of competitors at the XC Champs.

Download the podcast to hear Alan speak about these topics, his plans for the future, how he and Shayne compare to the other U.S. distance running power (such as Ryan & Sarah Hall and Adam & Kara Goucher) and much more!

Goucher looks to break coach’s record in New York

Section: News & Results, Marathons, Cross Country

adam_goucher.JPGWhen Adam Goucher lines up for the U.S. Men’s 8-K Championship on Saturday, March 17 in New York City’s Central Park, he’ll not only be trying to win his second national road racing title, but also knock off one of the country’s oldest national records, which happens to be held by his coach: marathon legend Alberto Salazar.

“It would mean a lot,” said Goucher yesterday of breaking Salazar’s record. “I’d like to have an American record.”

Salazar set the U.S. 8-K record of 22 minutes and four seconds over 26 years ago in Los Altos, Calif., in a race held at night. He recalled that it was hard to judge his speed in the darkness, and that for a few years he doubted the legitimacy of his own mark.

Big crowds cheer Culpepper & Kastor to U.S. XC Titles

Section: News & Results, Cross Country

culpepper_cross_2007_1.JPGAlan Culpepper and Deena Kastor scored convincing victories here at the U.S. Cross Country Championships presented by Gleukos, carried home by the biggest crowds these championships have seen in years. Some 10,000 fans lined the 2 km circuit at the Flatirons Golf Course, undetered by pools of slushy melting snow and thick mud.

Culpepper who went to the University of Colorado here and now lives in nearby Lousiville, said:

“Honestly, I mean, I almost came to tears coming down the homestraight. Boulder is my home … This is a special place.”

It is also special to Adam Goucher, Dathan Ritzenhein, and Jorge Torres, all of whom ran for Colorado in their university days. Like Culpepper, they enjoyed exceptional local fan support which helped them to finish 2-3-4, respectively, behind Culpepper.

Live @ the USA XC Champs: Goucher reflects on Alan’s win and his own performance

Section: News & Results, Cross Country, Special Features, Live Race Coverage

boulder_2007_xc_champs.gifAfter the race we had the opportunity to speak with Adam Goucher, who finished second in today’s U.S.A. XC Championships.

Goucher is the only U.S. man to have ever won both the 12km and 4km titles (when the Champs used to feature two separate races). He won titles in 1999, 2000 (both distances), 2000 and 2006.

When asked how he felt about his performance and coming in second to Alan Culpepper, Goucher said:

“If I was going to lose to someone I’m glad that it was to Alan who is my former teammate at CU. I’m not surprised that the top 4 finishers were CU runners. I expected that the outcome would be like it was. Alan ran the smartest race and that is why he ended up winning. I knew that Alan was coming up behind me strong on the third lap and he passed me with a lot of aggression.”
