Week 4: Stanford Runs to Pre-Nationals Win, No. 2 Ranking in Men’s D-I Poll

Stanford Cardinals logoUSTFCCCA: The Stanford Cardinals, running in the men’s 8-kilometer Pre-National White Race, picked up the team championship and improved eight spots in this week’s men’s Division I cross country poll to No. 2 behind top-ranked Oregon.

Oregon received eight of the 12 first-place votes with third-ranked Oklahoma State receiving the other four first-place votes as the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced the men’s top 30 on Tuesday.

Stanford easily outdistanced seventh-ranked Iona on Saturday as the Cardinal scored 77 points to Iona’s 123 in the White Race. The Cardinal were led by senior Garrett Heath who finished third with a time of 23:36.4.

Week 4: Washington Women Unanimous No. 1 After Dominating Pre-Nats

Washington Huskies LogoUSTFCCCA: An impressive team effort by the Washington Huskies women’s cross country team on Saturday led to a dominating win at the NCAA Division I Pre-National meet. The first major challenge for the Husky women paid big dividends as Washington picked up all 12 first-place votes this week in the women’s Division I cross country poll released Tuesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

The Huskies placed four women in the top-10 on Saturday scoring 36 points. Washington beat out 11 other ranked teams, including four in the-10 in the Blue Race. Sixth-ranked Villanova finished second to Washington.

The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association reported today that CBS College Sports (formerly CSTV), will be airing the NCAA Division I Championships from Des Moines, Ia., live on the Internet at the following link:

I’m not sure what time the coverage starts, but you can check in every hour or so. You must sign-up for the site to view the coverage, but there is no charge.


McDonnell, McDougal Win Regional Awards in D1 Men’s Cross Country

coach john mcdonnell university of arkansas razorbacksJohn McDonnell (Pictured) of Arkansas and Josh McDougal of Liberty lead a select group of coaches and athletes being honored as regional award winners for the Division I men’s cross country season.

The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced today the men’s coaches and athletes of the year for nine Division I regions.

McDonnell, the legendary Arkansas coach who has won 11 NCAA cross country championships, is the South Central Region Men’s Coach of the Year. The USTFCCCA Hall of Famer led the seventh-ranked Razorbacks to their 18th straight regional title.

McDougal is the Southeast Region Men’s Athlete of the Year. The Liberty senior won his third regional title Saturday in Louisville.

Each of the men’s coaches and athletes of the year advanced to Monday’s NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. Mark Wetmore of defending NCAA champion Colorado is the Chick Hislop Mountain Region Men’s Coach of the Year.

Kipyego, Tegen Among Regional Honorees for D1 Women’s Cross Country

Sally KipyegoWinning never gets old for Sally Kipyego (Pictured) of Texas Tech and Coach Peter Tegen of Stanford. To varying degrees, the same can be said of all the athletes and coaches earning recognition as regional award winners for the Division I women’s cross country season.

The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association today announced the women’s coaches and athletes of the year for nine Division I regions.

Kipyego, a four-time NCAA individual champion in indoor track, outdoor track and cross country, is the Mountain Region Women’s Athlete of the Year. The Texas Tech junior’s undefeated season includes victories at the Big 12 Conference Championship and the Mountain Regional. Kipyego will defend her national title at Monday’s NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships in Terre Haute, Ind.

Tegen’s runners will also be defending a title Monday. Stanford has won the last two NCAA championships and is favored to make it three in a row. The Cardinal won three of the toughest meets of the year – Pre-Nationals, Pacific-10 Conference Championship and the West Regional – and is ranked first in the country.

NCAA Cross Country Championships to Be Broadcast on the Web

USTFCCCA logo-200Monday’s NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships will be broadcast on the internet, according to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

The meet, one of the most exciting and competitive foot races held in the United States, will be contested at Indiana State University on Monday afternoon. The men’s 10 km race goes off at 12:08 p.m. eastern time followed by the women’s 6 km race at 12:58 p.m.

The broadcast will be produced by CSTV and will run from noon to 1:30 p.m. ET. A link for the broadcast will be available at http://www.ustfccca.org.

Women’s D-I XC Teams Prepare for Conference Championships

USTFCCCA logoDefending NCAA champion Stanford competes against three other teams ranked in the top 10 nationally at Saturday’s Pacific-10 Conference Cross Country Championships in Corvallis, Ore.

Starting Friday and continuing through Sunday, the top Division I women‚s teams compete in conference meets across the country. The Pac-10 and Big Ten conference meets each feature four teams ranked among the top 10 by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Championships.

The Pac-10 Championships include top-ranked Stanford, No. 2 Oregon, fifth-ranked Arizona State and No. 9 Washington.

Friday’s Big Ten Championships in Columbus, Ohio, matches sixth-ranked Michigan, No. 7 Michigan State, eighth-ranked Minnesota and No. 10 Illinois.

The USTFCCCA Division I polls remain the same this week since there was limited competition nationally as most teams rested for the upcoming conference, regional and national championships. The NCAA Championships will be held Nov. 20 at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Course in Terre Haute
