Top Ten Moments for U.S. Distance Running in 2007

ryan hall dathan ritzenhein brian sell qualify for 2007 olympic marathon team_250wideWhat a difference 7 years can make. Back in the “Dark Ages” of U.S. distance running circa 2000, there wasn’t a lot to cheer about or acknowledge, or put simply, U.S. distance running was in a funk.

And now, in 7 short years, due mainly to training groups, dedicated athletes and coaches, increased financial support, more promotion and success (think Meb & Deena) begetting more success (see the below), the United States has dramatically more to cheer about and moreover, has inspiration and a foundation for current and future stars. From a shortage of best moments 7 years ago to a surfeit of best moments, here are the best of 2007 for U.S. distance running:

Hall plans to join all-star field at XC championships in Boulder, Colorado

ryan-hall.jpegRyan Hall, the former Stanford runner who just set the U.S. record for the half marathon (00:59:43), announced on Monday that plans to compete in the February 10th USA cross Country Championships in Boulder, Colorado. Olympic medalists Meb Keflezighi and Deena Kastor has also confirmed their registration in the highly anticipated championships.

Held in Boulder for the first time, the 2007 XC Championships will take place at the Flatirons Golf Course and have a slightly different format. In the past it featured a 4k, but this year there will be just one 12k race. The best of the U.S. middle- and long-distance runners will compete for the national title and a spot on the U.S. team that will go on to compete in the IAAF World Cross Country Championships, scheduled for March 24 in Kenya.

Revival of US Distance Running

meb 1Not so long ago, the likes of Frank Shorter, Jim Ryun, Billy Mills, Steve Prefontaine, Bob Schull, Craig Virgin, Bill Dillinger, and many others were among the very best distance runners not only in America, but the world.

In the 90’s, the Moroccans, Ethiopians, and Kenyans have dominated distance running around the world, and in championship racing. After the retirement of perhaps America’s greatest distance runner in Bob Kennedy, there was much to be concerned about.

Worry no more. The distance running scene in America is young, bright, and hungry. 2006 has been a great year so far as well. Adam Goucher and Ryan Hall completed their cross country seasons with USA Championships in the 4K and 12K races; also to the best team placing
for America in many years.

Marathon Olympic Silver Medalist Meb Keflezighi placed 3rd in the Boston Marathon for the highest placing by an American in nearly 20 years by running 2:09:56. Americans Brian Sell and Alan Culpepper placed 4th and 5th respectively and America put three in the top five,
five in the top ten.
