Posted June 6th, 2008 at 8:03 AM by Jesse Squire
Section: News & Results, Track & Field
This weekend’s Prefontaine Classic promises to be a great meet as always. This year we’ll get something extra: a morning session has been added featuring a women’s 5k and a men’s 10k, and each race has the world record holder who will be trying to break it again. Today I will preview these races, with the remainder of the meet to come over the next few days.
TV coverage will be live on NBC from 4 to 6 p.m. EDT (1 to 3 p.m. local). For more information go to the Prefontaine Classic home page.
Note: In these previews I refer to the “Superfan World Rankings”. These are objective rankings based on meet results from the current year. Complete event-by-event rankings will be posted next week.
To the nitty-gritty: an event-by-event preview…

It boggles the mind, but Mac and Linux users will be unable to watch the NBC Sports / MediaZone webcasts of today’s U.S. Olympic Men’s Marathon Trials and tomorrow’s ING New York City Marathon.
Although some Mac and Linux users were able circumvent the problem in the past, MediaZone has announced on their website that their customer service will not provide support for third-party applications and operating systems.
Man, oh man did NBC and Mediazone drop the ball on this one.
However: Mac and Linux users CAN still follow all the action right here onTheFinalSprint.com!

NYC Half-Marathon releases elite fields; NYRR once again draws world’s best

The New York Road Runners released the elite fields for Sunday’s second annual NYC Half-Marathon presented by NIKE. NOTE: TheFinalSprint.com will feature videos of every pre- and post-race press conference, one-on-one video & audio interviews with top elites, and of course, LIVE coverage of the race itself!)
Led by two-time Olympic gold medalist, Haile Gebrselassie, the men’s field has three athletes who have broken one hour for the half-marathon distance, and a total of 11 men who have run 62:23 or better.
Catherine Ndereba, the 2003 world marathon champion who won the inaugural NYC Half-Marathon last year, headlines the women’s field. She’s just one of seven women who have broken the 71 minute barrier (three have run sub-70 minutes).
Former world marathon record holder, Khalid Khannouchi, was forced to withdraw from the race citing a mechanical problem in his stride which had been causing a burning sensation in the ball of his right foot, race officials reported. He and wife Sandra have flown to Barcelona to see an orthodics specialist.
