Episode 123 of The Final Sprint Podcast features my interview with 2008 USA Half-Marathon Champion James Carney. In his half-marathon racing debut, the 10,000m Olympic hopeful held off a competitive field and earned the U.S. title with a winning time of 1:02:21.
In the interview, Carney talks about his bold, and ultimately successful strategy of taking out the Aramco Houston Half-Marathon right from the first mile and why he would choose such a strategy in his first 13.1 mile race. He also talks about the “frustration” of his 2:16:54 performance at the US Olympic Marathon Trials, another debut, his plans to run the 10,0000m in Eugene, what it will take to earn a spot on Team USA, and the competitors that may pose the greatest threat to his Olympic dreams.
Download the podcast to hear Carney discuss what he believes will ultimately be his best event by the end of his running career, being perceived as a perennial “underdog”, and much more!

The prince saw an opportunity to take the throne, but in the end the king’s reign would continue, at least for another two years.
That was the basic scenario which played out in tonight’s much-anticipated men’s 10,000m final which capped an exciting evening of middle and long distance running at the 11th IAAF World Championships in Athletics at Nagai Stadium.
Sileshi Sihine, the Ethiopian who took the silver medal behind compatriot Kenenisa Bekele at both the 2004 Olympic Games and the 2005 World Championships, saw a chance to move up to the top step of the podium when Bekele fell to third place late in the race and appeared to be struggling.
A fast pace set by world cross country champion Zersenay Tadesse of Eritrea followed by an attack with three laps to go by Kenyan Martin Irungu Mathathi, set the stage for Sihine’s bid for victory. He shot ahead, opening a big gap and it looked like a gold medal move.

“Once you’re beat mentally, you might as well not even go to the starting line.” -Todd WilliamsWhen I nervously pinned my bib number onto my new technical tee, slathered my body in Ben-Gay, and stretched my aching glutes and hamstrings, I knew that I was not sufficiently prepared for the 26.2-mile journey ahead of me.
I was too stubborn to admit defeat, but when mile 14 rolled by, I stopped. I frantically watched as the seconds ticked away and my goal time turned into a sad country song . . . the man of my dreams didn’t slip away, but the race of my dreams sure did.

Saturday’s Gate River Run 15-K in Jacksonville, Fla., will feature some of America’s best male and female distance runners vying for the U.S. 15-K title and sizable prize and bonus money.

Olympic silver medalist, Meb Keflezighi, has won this race five of the last six years it has been contested has also won the race’s “Equalizer” division twice.
