London Marathon Signs with Virgin Group

Margarine and skimmed milk are out and airplanes and financial services are in, at least at the London Marathon.
Beginning in 2010 Virgin Group, the diversified conglomerate founded by Sir Richard Branson, will be the title sponsor of the London Marathon, led by their Virgin Money financial services division.
“I’m delighted that Virgin will be sponsoring the London Marathon,” Branson said through a media release. It’s an epic and inspirational event and raises a fantastic amount of money for great causes. It’s the single biggest fundraising day on the planet and we want to make it even bigger, our aim is to help runners smash the £1/4 billion in five years.”

Beginning in the spring of 2010, it won’t be called the “Flora London Marathon” any longer. But what will be the new name?
Journalists have been asked to assemble at the Tower Hotel on St. Katharine Way in London on Friday, May 16, to find out which company will be the London Marathon’s new title sponsor.
Race Results Weekly (RRW) spoke on background to a high-ranking London Marathon official on the day of the Boston Marathon who said that the London event had been pitched by five well-heeled sponsors all vying for the privilege of bankrolling the world’s top spring marathon.
Hartford to Join ING Sponsored Family of Marathons

ING, the Dutch financial giant which already sponsors marathons from Amsterdam to Taipei, has added Hartford, Conn., to its stable of races, organizers announced today. The event, held every October, will now be known as the ING Hartford Marathon and Half-Marathon.
“When ING gets behind a race, we know they’re serious about creating an exceptional experience for runners, spectators and everyone involved,” said Beth Shluger, race director and marathon founder through a media release. “We’re thrilled to have ING as our new title sponsor, helping to make this event even better by drawing elite runners from around the world and offering tremendous value to the region.”

Named Title Sponsor of BolderBOULDER 10K

Dick’s Sporting Goods, the largest full-line sporting goods retailer in the United States, and the BolderBOULDER, the second largest road race in the nation, have announced a 5-year agreement making Dick’s Sporting Goods the race’s title sponsor.
“We at Dick’s Sporting Goods are both proud and excited to become the title sponsor of the BolderBOULDER, which we consider to be one of the premier athletic events in the country,” said Jeffrey R. Hennion, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of Dick’s Sporting Goods. “This sponsorship ensures that our brand message will be represented to over 50,000 race participants annually as we continue to add stores throughout the state of Colorado.”
The BolderBOULDER, the nation’s largest timed race, is held annually on Memorial Day. The race attracts over 50,000 runners, walkers and wheelchair racers, and draws the top professional runners from around the world to compete for one of the largest non-marathon prize purses in road racing.
