Records continue to fall at The U.S. Olympic Trials. Jordan Hasay, 16, just ran 4:14.50 in the semifinal round of the women’s 1500 meters to break the national high school record.

Shannon Rowbury
won the first heat in 4:11.75. She and Tiffany McWilliams (4:12.80) moved up front after the first lap. At 800 meters, McWilliams was in the lead in 2:16. She led through the bell lap, but was passed by Rowbury and Amy Mortimer (4:12.89) in the end.

There were two high schoolers in the second heat, Hasay and Christine Babcock (4:20.00). Babcock got out fast with Erin Donohue (4:13.01), but could not maintain the speed past the first lap. Christine Wurth-Thomas (4:12.66) took the lead at 500 meters. Wurth-Thomas, Donohue, Lindsey Gallo (4:12.54) and Morgan Uceny (4:13.61) went through 800 meters in 2:17.68 and finished in the same order. The real action was going on behind the top four women when Hasay moved from near the back of the pack to a fifth-place finish and new high school record.

USA Indoor T&F Champs: Teter Returns to Form with 800m Win

The Women’s 800m marked a triumphant return to the top for U.S. record holder Nicole Teter. Teter ran 1:58.71 to set the U.S. record back in 2002 and was a major factor on the world 1500m scene before a slew of injuries slowed her in recent years. However she did break 2:00 last year and ran a 2:03.80 a few weeks ago. Her race here was her first national championship since 2003.

Tonight’s race was led early by Nicole Cook, who took the field through 200m in a brisk 29.6. She was followed closely by Teter, Miesha Marzell, and Tiffany McWilliams on the outside. The order was unchanged through 400m which was reached in 1:01.17.

Former University of Arkansas standout Christin Wurth-Thomas put on a dominant front-running display to win her first national title at the 2008 USATF Indoor Championships. Wurth-Thomas ran an outstanding 4:27.18 full mile last week at the Tyson Invitational and followed it up with a 1500m victory here in 4:14.21.

Tonight’s race started off with a very slow first 400m (1:17.9) as the runners jockeyed for position and settled in. Confident in her strength, Wurth-Thomas surged to the lead at that point and never looked back. Jenelle Deatherage and Amy Mortimer gave chase with the rest of the field stringing out behind them.
