NYC Half-Marathon releases elite fields; NYRR once again draws world’s best

NOTE: TheFinalSprint.com will feature videos of every pre- and post-race press conference, one-on-one video & audio interviews with top elites, and of course, LIVE coverage of the race itself!)

Led by two-time Olympic gold medalist, Haile Gebrselassie, the men’s field has three athletes who have broken one hour for the half-marathon distance, and a total of 11 men who have run 62:23 or better.

Catherine Ndereba
, the 2003 world marathon champion who won the inaugural NYC Half-Marathon last year, headlines the women’s field. She’s just one of seven women who have broken the 71 minute barrier (three have run sub-70 minutes).

Former world marathon record holder, Khalid Khannouchi, was forced to withdraw from the race citing a mechanical problem in his stride which had been causing a burning sensation in the ball of his right foot, race officials reported. He and wife Sandra have flown to Barcelona to see an orthodics specialist.

Keflezighi joins field for Beach to Beacon 10-K

Meb_2006_press_conferenceOlympic silver medalist Meb Keflezighi has joined the elite field for the 10th TD Banknorth Beach to Beacon 10-K scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 4 in Cape Elizebeth, Me., organizers announced today.

The 32 year-old Eritrean-born American will be making his Beach to Beacon debut, and will be facing defending champion, Thomas Nyariki of Kenya, and his compatriot, Gilbert Okari, who has won the race three times.

“Getting someone like Meb really adds another layer of interest and excitement for the fans,” said Larry Barthlow, the race’s elite athlete coordinator, through a media release. “But he obviously has his work cut out for him with Gilbert Okari determined to get his title back.”

Course record for Nyariki at Moonlight Run

Showing no signs of slowing down at 35 years-old, Kenyan Olympian Thomas Nyariki zipped through the streets of New Milford, Conn., last night at the 14th annual New Balance Moonlight Run 5-K in a snappy 13 minutes and 36 seconds, wiping out Patrick Nthiwa’s 2003 course record by 22 seconds.

Live @ the NYC Marathon: Newcomer Santos takes lead after 20 miles, most favorites close behind

On the men’s side, Marilson Gomes Dos of Brazil has made a strong move and opened up a 12 second lead after 20 miles. This is Santos’ debut marathon and he is certainly trying to make a statement by going out so fast.

The rest of the pack includes most of the favorites, such as: Paul Tergat, Rodgers Rop, Stephen Kiogora, Thomas Nyariki, Youssef Galmin, Daniel Yego and William Kipsang.. They seem to believe that Santos will drop off, as there is plenty of race left to go, and are making no efforts to regain the lead

America’s Meb Keflezighi has dropped off and fallen behind the leaders by more than a minute. However, America still has as shot with newcomer Dathan Ritzenhein only about 17 seconds behind Santos.
