Bean Counters Threaten To Close Ottawa’s Only Track
Looking for a potential savings of $125,000, beaureaucrats in Ottawa, Canada’s capital city, are threatening to close down the Terry Fox Athletic Facility, the only track in Ottawa. The facility is named after Terry Fox, the Canadian runner who – despite having one leg amputated because of cancer – ran across Canada to raise money and awareness for cancer research. College To Honor Larry James, ‘68 U.S. Olympian
Larry James, part of the gold-medal-winning 4×400m relay team at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, will be honored by the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. James has worked at the college as a track coach, athletic director and finally as Dean of Athletics. James, an African-American, came out publicly against the infamous protests at the games by other black athletes. Read more at: [The Star-Ledger - NJ.com, NJ]

Evel KnievelEvel Knievel Was A Track Athlete
You might not have known this, but Evel Knievel, who died yesterday at the age of 69, was an outstanding track & field athlete. The death-defying daredevil, an exceptional athlete who played hockey and ski jumped, was also a pole-vaulter on the Army track team. Read more at: [NY Times][Wikipedia]

Yelena IsinbayevaIsinbayeva Predicts World Record to Come Soon
Russian Pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva (right) confidently predicted a new world record will come soon. With a confidence that borders on arrogance, the world-record holder said about tomorrow’s DKB-ISTAF meet in Berlin, “it doesn’t matter who is there, I will only concentrate on myself. $1 Million Payday Tomorrow at Berlin
The 2007 Golden League concludes tomorrow in Berlin, Germany at the DKB-ISTAF meet. Although Yelena Isinbayeva and Sanya Richards are the only remaining contenders for the $1 Million jackpot, there are still 4 scenarios, including a couple in which Croatian high-jumper Blanka Vlašić plays a role. In the world of running, discouragement can come in many forms. Maybe the weather’s too cold to go outside for your morning jog, your trainer is saying you’re not ready for major races, or you just don’t think you’re good enough to be a marathon runner. Many people let these bits of negativity stand between them and achieving their dreams, fulfilling their potential, etc.

Then there’s the runners of the Achilles Track Club. Achilles is a worldwide non-profit organization whose mission is enabling individuals with all types of disabilities to participate in mainstream athletics; promoting personal achievement, enhancing self esteem, and lowering barriers between individuals.
