Josh McDougal named USATF Athlete of the Week

Josh McDougal has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after winning the men’s NCAA Division I Cross Country Championship Monday, November 19 at the LaVern Gibson Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind.

A senior at Liberty University, McDougal out-kicked Galen Rupp of Oregon in the men’s 10 km race in a thrilling homestretch battle, crossing the finish line in 29 minutes 22 seconds.

Rupp finished just one second behind in 29:23. McDougal is the first Liberty athlete to win an NCAA Cross Country title.

McDougal Prevails Over Rupp at NCAA D-I Cross Country Championships

The coaches’ pre-meet rankings held up as the top-ranked Oregon men and Stanford women won the team titles at today’s NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships at Terre Haute’s Laverne Gibson Championships Cross Country Course.

Liberty’s Josh McDougal took an exciting men’s race over a dry course with temperatures in the upper 50s.

Despite the near perfect racing conditions, the men’s race sent out slowly with nearly everyone still in contention through 3 km in 8:57, and the halfway point in 15:09.

“I wasn’t surprised that the race went out so slow,” said McDougal after the race. “Two years under nearly identical conditions, the race went out slow.”

NCAA D-I Cross Country Announces Championship Qualifiers

The NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Committee announced today the team and individual qualifiers for the 2007 Division I Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships.

In order to be eligible to participate in the championships, teams and individuals must qualify in their respective NCAA regions.

Thirty-one teams were selected to participate in each championship. The top two, seven-person teams automatically qualified from each of the nine regions, for a total of 18 teams. Thirteen additional teams were selected at-large.

Thirty-eight individuals, the first four athletes from each region who are not a part of a qualifying team and two additional qualifiers, were selected to participate in each championship. All individual qualifiers must finish in the top 25 in their region.

Lehigh set to host the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional XC Champs on Saturday

Lehigh will host the 2007 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Saturday morning on the Goodman Campus Cross Country Course. The Division I men’s 10K race will start at 11 a.m., followed by the Division I women’s 6K race at 12:15 p.m. Goodman Campus will also serve as host to the Division III Mideast Regional, with the women’s 6K race starting at 1:15, followed by the men’s 8K race at 2:15.

The Division I men’s race will feature 33 schools, including defending champion and nationally ranked Georgetown (No. 14) as well as Patriot League champion American and Paul Short winner Villanova. The Mountain Hawks will send eight runners to the course, led by freshman Dan McClimon and junior Dan DeWitt.

The women’s race will feature 33 schools, including defending champion and nationally ranked Princeton (No. 4), West Virginia (No. 14), Georgetown (No. 20) and Penn State (No. 28). The Princeton women are also the winners of this year’s Paul Short Run, finishing ahead of West Virginia. The Brown and White will send nine runners to the course, led by junior Shannon Alejandro, who was named to the All-Patriot League first team.

Boston College to Host NCAA D-I Northeast Region Cross Country Championships

The Boston College men’s and women’s cross country teams will play host to the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships held at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass., on Sat. Nov. 10.

The men, who are ranked 13th in the Northeast bracket, will start competition at 2:30 p.m. They will race amongst other top-ranked squads including Iona (1), Providence (2), Syracuse (3), Cornell (4) and Columbia (5).

The Eagles turned in a 10th place finish at last year’s regional championship. Senior captain Patrick Mellea ran the course in 31:36.8, qualifying him for the NCAA Championship.

NCAA West Regional Cross Country Preview

The University of Oregon proudly welcomes one of the top cross country meets on U.S. soil to Track Town, USA as the NCAA West Regional Championships make their first trip to the Springfield Country Club, Saturday, November 10.

On that day, Eugene-Springfield is one of nine host sites across the nation that automatically advance the top two team finishers and top four individuals from non-qualifying teams to the NCAA Championships, scheduled for Monday, November 19 at Indiana State University’s LaVern Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute, Ind.

Another 13 at-large teams and two at-large individuals will be added from across the nation to the 31-team, 255-runner M&W NCAA fields on the evening of Sun., Nov. 11. At-large team selection criteria is based on teams’ head-to-head records against other actual and potential NCAA qualifiers.

MEN’S RACE PREVIEW

In 2006, the Oregon men scored their first regional men’s team championship since 1989 thanks to five top-20 finishers – four of which return in ’07.

Coach McDonnell Honored by the Southeastern Conference

Arkansas’ John McDonnell was chosen as the SEC Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year, it was announced by the conference on Tuesday.

The award marks McDonnell’s 13th consecutive SEC Cross Country Coach of the Year award and 16th overall after guiding his Razorbacks to another SEC Championship. The Hogs won Arkansas’ 34th-consecutive cross country conference title and its 17th-consecutive SEC cross country title. The title win also marks Arkansas’ 82nd conference title (cross country, indoor and outdoor).

McDonnell has been named National Coach of the Year 12 times in indoor track, 11 times in outdoor track and seven times in cross country for a total of 30 awards. He has been Conference Coach of the Year a remarkable 48 times, and Region Coach of the Year 61 times.

Wisconsin Badgers Capture Record Ninth-Straight Big Ten Cross Country Title

The Wisconsin men’s cross country team had five runners finish in the the top-10 to score 33 points and win its ninth-consecutive Big Ten Conference title Sunday at the Ohio State University Golf Course in Columbus, Ohio.

With the win, the fifth-ranked Badgers set a new conference record for consecutive conference championships. UW also held the previous record of eight straight titles between 1985 and 1992. No. 22 Minnesota finished second with 65 points while Ohio State was third with 91 points.

Wisconsin was led by junior Matt Withrow (Tinley Park, Ill.), who took home the individual title by completing the 8,000-meter course in a time of 23 minutes, 44.37 seconds. He finished more than three seconds ahead of second-place finisher Hassan Mead of Minnesota. Fellow junior, Stu Eagon (Portland, Ore.), finished fifth in a time of 23:55.35. Both Withrow and Eagon earned first-team All-Big Ten honors.

Oregon Ducks Add Chapters to Pac-10 Cross Country History

The top-two nationally ranked Duck cross country teams savored some of their best showings ever Saturday in the Pacific-10 Conference Championships, hosted by Oregon State University at at Trysting Tree Golf Course.

Under sunny, 62-degree nearly cloudless skies, the No. 1 Duck men won their 15th league title and were led by juniors Shadrack Kiptoo-Biwott and Galen Rupp who nearly finished together and went 1-2 overall.

The No. 2 Oregon women claimed second place - their highest finish since 1997 - and were led by freshman Alexandra Kosinski and sophomore Nicole Blood who placed third and fourth overall.

Stanford Women Capture 12th Straight Pac-10 Title, Men Edged by Top-Ranked Oregon

The No. 15 Stanford men ran to a second place finish this morning at the Pac-10 Cross Country championships in Corvallis, Ore. The Cardinal scored a total of 55 points, while No. 1 Oregon captured the team title with 39 points. No. 8 Cal rounded out the top three as they recorded 70 points.

Russell Brown was the first Stanford runner to cross the finish line as he earned a third place finish in a time of 23:08.7 Hari Mix was second for the Cardinal with a fifth place finish with his time of 23:11.6, followed right behind by teammate Neftalem Araia in sixth with a 23:12.1. Hakon DeVries posted a 17th place finish as he crossed the line in 23:30.0, while John McGuire was the final point scorer as he posted a 24th place finish in a time of 23:43.2.

Garrett Heath finished in a time of 23:47.7 to take 29th place in the race, while brother Elliot Heath finished in 35th with his time of 23:53.9. Lauren Jespersen recorded a time of 24:02.9 to take 39th, followed by Justin Marpole-Bird in 43rd place with a 24:09.2. Brendan Gregg was the final Stanford runner to cross the line in 51st place with a time of 24:24.1. Shadrack Kiptoo-Biwott captured the individual title as he stopped the clock with a time of 22:54.9.

The No. 1 Cardinal women captured their 12th straight Pac-10 title as they scored 48 team points for the victory. Oregon claimed a second place finish as they scored 64 points, while Arizona State earned third with 68 points.
