Wins by Jamal, Sinclair the highlights in chilly Lausanne

Running in chilly conditions that dipped below 50 degrees F (9 C.), Maryam Yusuf Jamal and Jamaican Kenia Sinclair produced the chief highlights at the Athletissima Super Grand Prix in Lausanne tonight.
After a dismal 13th place finish in Paris last Friday, Jamal was clearly trying to illustrate a point 1500. Running before a supportive hometown crowd –the 22-year-old Ethiopian-born Bahraini has been based in Lausanne since fleeing Ethiopia in 2002– Jamal cruised to a front-running victory in 4:03.61. Never seriously challenged –she had a near four second lead at the bell– Jamal easily held off the late race charge of Ukraine’s Iryna Lishchynska (4:04.27) and Russians Olga Yegorova (4:04.64) and two-time world champion Tatyana Tomashova (4:05.48).
U.S. champion Treniere Clement briefly followed Jamal and pacesetter Olga Komyagina’s solid tempo, but paid for it dearly 800 meters into the race. Fading badly over the final lap and a half, she finished 22nd in the 23 woman field.

The 30th edition of the Luzerner Stadtlauf took place tonight in Luzern, Switzerland, and Australian Craig Mottram and Hungarian Anikó Kálovics took the top honors.
Mottram, making his first appearance at this event, finished comfortably in front in 24:53.3 over the 8710m course. Mottram gapped his most serious challenger, Austrian Martin Pröll, all in the last kilometer. Pröll clocked 25:02.6, well ahead of Kenyan Stanley Salil who finished third (25:16.1).
Kálovics, who runs for an Italian club, defended her title in the women’s elite event over a shorter course of 4250m. She completely dominated the race, breaking the tape in 13:03.9, some 22 seconds over runner-up Caroline Chepkwony of Kenya (13:25.4). Australian Victoria Mitchell finished third in 13:26.9, just behind Chepkowny.

TN Sunglasses: High-quality performance eyewear for runners and other athletes

Sunglasses and I typically do not play well together. I have purchased — and destroyed — countless pairs of lenses and frames over the years through a gamut of mishaps.
These destructive events were not of malevolent intent, but were rather quite accidental; whether by sitting on them, stepping on them, my dog’s chewing habit, or running them over with the lawnmower (yes, that really happened). Accidents … all of them! Oh, and the sunglasses that I manage to keep in one piece, I tend to lose.
Because of my tendency to destroy or lose my sunglasses, I am often forced to buy the cheapest pair possible in order to minimize my financial and emotional risk. These cheap-o’s, although easy on the pocketbook, are usually heavier, less comfortable, of lower lense quality, and less suitable for rigorous running. Thus, they tend to become relegated for driving-use only.
Enter TN Sunglasses; a Swiss brand created in 2002 that recently began entering the U.S. market. TN boasts that their sunglasses are virtually indestructible and that their frames can literally be tied in a knot without damage! They also back this up with a lifetime guarantee against manufacturer’s defects.
This propriety material-plus-design combination, called TSM System, also makes them extremely lightweight. In fact, with lenses the Force One model (seen above) weighs a mere 23 grams and the Shadow model (pictured below) a feathery 17 grams!
