Kenyan Benjamin Korir Kiprotich and Russia’s Svetlana Ponomarenko won the 25th Athens Classic Marathon today. In mild weather conditions with temperatures around a maximum of 20° Celsius and an occasional light rain winning times were much faster than in the years before. Benjamin Korir Kiprotich clocked 2:14:40 on the classic route from Marathon to Athens’ Panathinaikon Stadium while Svetlana Ponomarenko crossed the line in 2:33:19.
Kenyans had won the Athens Classic Marathon three times in a row. And they dominated the race again today, extending their win streak. Eight of them formed the leading group when the half way point was passed in 68:07 minutes. At about 35 k Benjamin Korir Kiprotich broke away and opened a decisive gap.

After leading the pack from the start, Mykola Antonenko increased the overall pack pace by mile two. Ed Eyestone called the race for the elite men in the lead vehicle ahead of the pack. According to Eyestone, Augustus Kavutu Mbusya put on the heat between miles 5 and 6, but Antonenko broke away at mile 7. By the half-marathon mark, race officials say he maintained at least a minute lead ahead of the rest of the pack, finishing with a time of 2:13:54.
Antonenko said he was happy with his race, but didn’t achieve his goal today. “Psychologically it’s hard to do your goal time by yourself. If I had a group of people pulling me, I could have reached my 2:11 goal,” he said.
“It was a gutsy, courageous effort on his part to go for it on day that was a bit warm,” said Eyestone. Joseph Mutinda finished second with a time of 2:20:12 and Mbusya was third with a time of 2:21:13.

Kenyan Moses Kororia finished the race in 2:12:04; breaking Jeff Lodwick’s 24 year record of 2:12:18. Kororia was also able to overtake Russia’s Svetlana Ponomarenko a few yards before the 24th mile to win an additional $25,000.
