IAAF Super Grand Prix Preview: DN Galan

The IAAF’s World Athletics Tour comes to Sweden on Monday and Tuesday for the second of its five Super Grand Prix meets, the DN Galan, in the Stockholms Olympiastadion.

Event-by-Event Previews:

The men’s and women’s shot put competitions will be held Monday evening in downtown Stockholm. A ring has been set up along with seating for 500, and it will be held on live TV (Sweden only, unfortunately for us!). This special attention has attracted the top four putters from the US Olympic Trials, #1 Reese Hoffa, #2 Christian Cantwell, #3 Adam Nelson and #13 Dan Taylor, along with Canadian Record holder #15 Dylan Armstrong, Jamaican record holder #5 Dorian Scott, and German star #7 Peter Sack. The women’s competition will have #2 Nadzeya Ostapchuk facing off against #3 Nadine Kleinert.

Athletics Managers Group Agrees to Not Represent Banned T&F Athletes

An agreement has been reached by the Association of Athletics Managers (AAM) that its members will not represent any athlete who tests positive and is convicted of a doping violation for which he or she serves a two-year ban or longer. It is believed to be one of the first such agreements in any sport.

The association, whose 29 members represent many of the top track-and-field athletes in the world, reached the decision at its annual meeting in Miami Beach, which ended Thursday (8).

Among other issues discussed were ways to streamline meet payments to athletes and to improve conditions for athletes on both the IAAF World Athletics Tour and at major championships.

Distance stars shine in Stockholm

Many of the sport’s middle and long distance stars shined at last night’s DN Galan meeting in Stockholm, an IAAF Super Grand Prix event.

Kenenisa Bekele dominated the men’s 3000m, running the fastest time of the year and winning by about ten seconds. The Ethiopian’s 7:25.79 clocking made him the #6 performer of all-time, and he has run the three fastest times in the world this year at this distance. He is gearing up for his title defense at 10,000m at the IAAF World Championships in Osaka, the only event he will contest at those championships according to his manager, Valentijn Trouw. Second place went to Jonas Cheruiyot of Kenya in 7:35.44. American Matt Tegenkamp ran his fastest 3000m of the season, finishing fourth in 7:35.68.

American Deena Kastor won the women’s 5000m in 14:52.21, perhaps a birthday gift to husband Andrew who turned 30 yesterday. Her time was only slightly off of her personal best of 14:51.62 set on the same track back in 2000. Like Bekele, Kastor will contest the 10,000m in Osaka.

Wariner, Vlasic move up to
No. 3 All-Time in Stockholm

Jeremy Wariner underscored his dominance in the men’s 400m after his blistering 43.50 victory at the DN Galan Super Grand Prix in Stockholm tonight.

Wariner, the reigning world and Olympic champion and still just 23, won by nearly a full second over fellow American Kerron Clement (44.48, personal best), to move up a notch on the all-time world list, tying American Quincy Watts as the third fastest in history. Only world record holders Michael Johnson (43.18) and Butch Reynolds (43.29) have run faster.

Wariner’s effort was one of several outstanding performances at what was the finest single-day meet of the season.

Allyson Felix upsets Richards; Sets stadium record and earns some bling

Sanya Richards was hoping to get a DN Galan diamond by breaking the stadium record of 50.13 seconds in the 400m dash. She did break the stadium record with a time of 49.72 seconds; unfortunately for her, Allyson Felix was ahead of her at the finish line.

Felix, just overtaking Richards in the closing seconds of the race with a huge PB of 49.70 seconds (her previous PB was 50.40), proved that she is indeed a triple threat in the 100m, 200m and 400m.

Blanka Vlašic Jumps Lifetime Best; World-Leading 2.07m

Blanka Vlašic took yet another diamond away from the DN Galan meet organizers with a lifetime best of 2.07m, just 0.02m away from Bulgarian Stefka Kostadinova’s phenomenal world record of 2.09m, set 20 years ago. Although Vlašic also made 3 attempts at a new world record of 2.10m, only one of the attempts was close. She is all but assured of a gold medal in Osaka. Kajsa Bergqvist, despite having a home-crowd advantage, could only muster a 1.98m third place finish. Anna Chicherova, also jumping 1.98m, took 2nd place with fewer misses.

Bekele wins 3000m and a diamond at DN Galan

Kenenisa Bekele ran a time of 7 minutes, 25.79 seconds at the DN Galan meet in Stockholm, Sweden, demolishing a world-class field by nearly 10 seconds in the process. Bekele’s time is the 8th fastest 3000m ever run and makes him the 6th fastest 3000m runner of all time, just 5.12 seconds behind Daniel Komen’s world record of 7:20.67 set in 1996. His time was also good enough for a DN Galan diamond, breaking Isaac Songok’s meet record of 7.35.84 by nearly 10 seconds. Three other runners also broke the stadium record.

Paul Kipsiele Koech breaks 8min; wins DN-Galan Steeple

Paul Kipsiele Koech devastated a quality field at the DN Galan in Stockholm, Sweden, running a stadium-record time of 7:59.42 minutes in the 3000m steeplechase and winning a diamond in the process. Koech became the first man to break 8 minutes for the steeplechase in 2007 and proved that a gold medal in the steeplechase later this month in Osaka will be a hollow victory without him. Koech, having finished a disappointing 4th in the Kenya national championships this season, failed to qualify for Osaka.

Wariner Posts a 43.50 in the 400m in Stockholm!

Jeremy Wariner proved that he is peaking for the world championships at the right time by running a career best 43.50 seconds in the 400m run Tuesday at the DN Galan meet in Stockholm, Sweden.

His time ties Quincy Watts for the 6th fastest 400m of all time and, along with Watts, makes him the 3rd fastest 400m runner of all time. Only Michael Johnson (43.18, 43.39, 43.44, 43.49) and Harry Reynolds (43.29) have run faster. His time also beat his own stadium record of 44.02 and guarantees him a 1 carat diamond valued at $10,000. The DN Galan meet is famous for awarding a diamond to any athlete who breaks a stadium record. Wariner beat second place finisher Kerron Clement by nearly a full second.
