The women’s 400 meters and men’s 400m hurdles will be the most anticipated events at the second event of the IAAF Golden League, the Meeting Gaz de France Paris Saint-Denis in France. The IAAF Golden League 2007 offers a $1 Million Jackpot, which represents international athletics’ biggest annual payday. Athletes must win at all six meetings to acquire at least a share.
- The women’s 400 meters will see a rematch of the 400 final from the U.S. Championships, as 2007 U.S. champion DeeDee Trotter is challenged by 2007 NCAA champion and 2007 U.S. runner-up Natasha Hastings, 2007 U.S. third-place finisher Mary Wineberg and 2006 IAAF Athlete of the Year, Sanya Richards. Richards is a contender for the Golden League Jackpot, having won the women’s 400m at the ExxonMobil Bislett Games, and is determined to win after her surprising fourth-place finish in Indy.

The AT&T USA Outdoor Championships got off with a bang in Indianapolis yesterday when Breaux Greer extended his own national record in the javelin throw to 91.29m [299-6].
“I didn’t hit it hard but I hit it clean,” said Greer, whose massive effort eclipsed the 90.71 [297-7] mark he set at last month’s adidas Track Classic in Carson, Calif. It was the fourth national record for the 30-year-old, and the performance extended his own 2007 world lead in the event.

2006 IAAF World Athlete of the Year Sanya Richards is off to a good start in the IAAF Golden League 2007, winning the women’s 400 meters at the ExxonMobil Bislett Games Friday in Oslo, Norway.
In only her second meet of the season, Richards ran 50.29 to steal the show in the women’s 400m. Amy Mbacke Thiam was runner-up, nearly a second behind Richards, in 51.22. Richards must win the five remaining Golden League meets and compete in the World Athletics Final in order to win at least a share of the $1,000,000 jackpot.
2004 Olympic gold medalist Meseret Defar of Ethiopia smashed her own world record by almost 8 seconds in the women’s 5,000 meters, cruising to the finish line in an astounding 14:16.63. Her previous record was 14:24.53.
