Sole Responsibility launches 3rd annual shoe collection campaign for Darfur refugees

sole responsibility.jpgTracey Clark, Managing Partner of Bridgehead Coffee and Alew Bwolo a refugee from the Sudan region of Africa will join representatives from Sole Responsibility as they launch a massive initiative to collect running shoes for the Sudanese refugees from Darfur. Alew will share his experiences of life in a refugee camp.

Sole Responsibility is a non-profit organization formed by a group of runners from Ottawa. Until May 31st, Sole Responsibility will collect used running shoes throughout the city and at the Pfizer Sports Expo at the Ottawa Race Weekend.

Last year Sole Responsibility collected over 2500 pairs of shoes. In previous years shoes collected by Sole Responsibility were sent to Chad, Africa where they were distributed by the UNHCR to the Sudanese refugees from Darfur.

Six “running-centric” strides to help the environment

al_gore_inconvenient_truth.jpgAl Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth” was a powerful and enlightening documentary. While viewing it in the theater last year, I was inspired by the tips that rolled during the ending credits on how to take action and make a positive environmental impact. As the movie’s website phrases it:

“You have the power to make a difference. Small changes to your daily routine can add up to big changes in helping to stop global warming.”

This statement both challenged and motivated me. Changes need to come from both the top-down and the bottom-up. It’s not just national and state governments’ responsibility to fix problems, but also my own! Personal responsibility is a powerful concept in the workplace, in our relationships, and yes, in the environment.

While there are many methods for making a positive difference in the environment through day-to-day living, my “running-centric” view of life leads me to relate everything to running. So I pondered the question, what can I do as a runner to aid the environment in which I live and play? Below are some of the ideas I came up with …

SOLE RESPONSIBILITY - “Help Others Put Their Best Foot Forward”

sole responsibility.jpgHow many times have you wished that your shoes would last just a little bit longer or that you could at least find something better to do with your old running shoes than throw them in the trash?

Just about every runner has at least one pair of shoes that he or she no longer runs in - So why not put them to good use?

In addition to Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe program that we reported on back in June, there is now another extremely positive and worthwhile program to participate in called: Sole Responsibility!

Sole Responsibility, based in Ottawa, Canada, started as a conversation between a few runners and has grown into an expansive project that gives running shoes and other sneakers to refugees in the Darfur Region. Read the rest of this entry »
