2008 Beijing Olympic Preview: Women’s Shot Put

Posted August 8th, 2008 at 9:00 AM by Jesse Squire

Section: News & Results, Track & Field, Olympics, Drugs In Sports

Women’s Shot Put
The Schedule: qualifying and final, Saturday Aug 16
The Americans: #6 Kristin Heaston, Jill Camarena, Michelle Carter
The Contenders: #1 Nadzeya Ostapchuk (BLR), #2 Valerie Vili (NZL), #3 Nadine Kleinert (GER), #14 Yulia Leantsiuk (BLR), #15 Meiju Li (CHN)
The Stats: Records, 2008 List, 2007 Worlds, 2004 Olympics
The Medal Picks: T&FN - Vili, OStapchuk, Natallia Mikhnevich; SI - Ostapchuk, Vili, Kleinert
The Story: This is a two-woman battle between Ostapchuk and Vili. The Belarussian has put up some very big numbers lately, but the Kiwi has won their last two championship meetings. In Osaka last summer, Ostapchuk led throughout the competition until Vili unleashed a Commonwealth Record on her last attempt.

Third will likely come down to Kleinert and Leantsuk, who have made the next best series of throws after the two leaders. Li, who won bronze at this year’s World Indoor championships, has an outside shot at the medal stand.

Youngsters in New Zealand have been challenged to invent a machine that can throw the 4kg shot further than Vili’s PR of 20.54 meters, and winners in two age groups will compete head-to-head with her after the Olympics.

2008 Beijing Olympic Preview: Men’s Shot Put

Posted August 7th, 2008 at 12:10 PM by Jesse Squire

Section: News & Results, Track & Field, Olympics

Men’s Shot Put
The Schedule: qualifying and finals, Friday Aug 15
The Americans: #1 Reese Hoffa, #2 Adam Nelson, #3 Christian Cantwell
The Contenders:#4 Tomasz Majewski (POL), #5 Dorian Scott (JAM), #15 Andrei Mikhnevich (BLR)
The Stats: Records, 2008 List, 2007 Worlds, 2004 Olympics
The Medal Picks: T&FN-Hoffa, Nelson, Cantwell; SI-Hoffa, Nelson, Mikhnevich
The Story: Nelson has twice been an Olympic silver medalist, and this may be his last best chance at gold. In 2004 he lost on the tie-breaker, and in 2003 he was beaten at the Worlds by Mikhnevich, who had just come off a doping suspension, leaving Nelson infuriated. The Belarussian has mostly hid from the rest of the world this year but his results suggest he’ easily in form to put Nelson (or anyone else) out of the top spot again.

Cantwell dominated the early season but has fallen off over the last few months. Hoffa has been far and away the most consistent, so the safe money is on him. But when Nelson has hit it just right this year, which he’s done only twice, no one else can beat him.

prefontaine classic 2008 posterMeet records fell across all event groups, none bigger than Brad Walker’s American record in the pole vault, and Maria Mutola had a historic exit Sunday at the Nike Prefontaine Classic.

The fourth event of USATF’s Visa Championship Series, the Nike Prefontaine Classic drew a meet-record 14,221 fans to Hayward Field, site of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Track & Field June 27-July 6. They were treated to a formidable show, including no fewer than eight meet records and Walker’s AR.

The 2007 world champion, Walker looked magnificent throughout the competition. He had just one miss, at his opening height of 5.70m/18-8.25, then passed to 5.90m/19-4.25, which he cleared on his first attempt and which won the competition for him. Walker then elevated the bar to 6.04m/19-9.75. On his very first attempt, he cleared, brushing the bar just a bit, but leaving it up.

Is this fuel to spark the big men’s competitive fires, or is it a major distraction in an Olympic year?
