In 1999 I posted two essays titled “The Decline of American Marathoners” & “Why Have They Declined?” on Runner’s World and Merv Competitive forums, which I subsequently updated in 2001.
They generated extensive discussions concerning the deterioration in performance of American marathoners throughout the 1990’s, as compared to the 1970-80’s.
The decline at the elite level was well documented by official records. Not only were U.S. elites no longer competitive on the international racing scene, but they could not even match the performances of their predecessors a decade or two earlier.

Attention Race Directors: Have Your Race Sponsored For Free!
Posted June 8th, 2006 at 12:01 AM by Adam Jacobs
Section: News & Results
There are literally hundreds of thousands of small races that take place each year around the world. Many of these events are organized and executed by small and dedicated staffs with a host of volunteers. In addition, large percentages of them benefit charities, noble causes and/or other worthy causes.
In trying to find ways to lower your overhead expenses and make your lives just that much easier, The Final Sprint has identified a fantastic opportunity for you to take advantage of: the “Runners World Magazine” Race Sponsorship Program.

This program offers race directors free race supplies (including a choice of race numbers or sturdy event bags), calendar listings, product samples and even special subscription offers. Of course this also benefits our friends at Runner’s World Magazine through some wonderful advertising. However, it will save your race a heap of time and money – which will allow you to raise more funds for your charity of choice and administer a more efficient race. So go ahead and take advantage – you’ve earned it!
