Lance RunningAmong those who call themselves runners, there seems to be a shared sense of community and understanding. We smile knowingly at tales of windy 20-milers or sunrise jogs on the water. We compare black toenails and favorite Clif Gel flavors.

Unfortunately, we can also sympathize and relate to stories of injury or woes from those taking lengthy breaks from a regular running routine; spending their mornings in physiotherapy rather than on the trails. Although many people believe that injuries are a natural consequence of such a high-impact sport, this couldn’t be further from the truth.

Running America documentary logoThis June, Running the Sahara’s Charlie Engle and Marshall Ulrich are going to set off on their record-breaking run from San Francisco to New York. Their journey will be filmed and crafted into a historical documentary entitled Running America. NEHST is currently casting runners to join these athletes as they make history and raise money toward the water crisis in Africa.

If casted, you are only allowed to run one mile with Charlie and Marshall, but you can drop back and continue to run if you’d like. Anyone is eligible for submissions, no matter how young, old, disabled or experienced you may be. This is a great opportunity to be in front of cameras, meet some celebrities and be a part of history. TheFinalSprint.com, TFS Media Network and I would like to applaud Brooks on their commitment to environmental sustainability and for the innovation, as described below, of a new biodegradable midsole in running shoes.

brooks running logoBrooks Sports, Inc., a leading performance running company, today introduced from its sales meeting BioMoGo, the world’s first biodegradable midsole.

Blazing a new trail in the athletic industry by offering runners more environmentally friendly footwear, Brooks designed its new BioMoGo midsole to biodegrade 50 times faster than conventional athletic shoes.

BioMoGo midsoles include a non-toxic, natural additive that exponentially increases the rate of biodegradation by encouraging anaerobic microbes to biodegrade nutrients into reusable byproducts. While Traditional Ethylene Vinyl Acetate™ (EVA) midsoles can last up to 1,000 years in an enclosed landfill, extensive tests have proven that BioMoGo can biodegrade in roughly 20 years when placed in the same environment. By using BioMoGo in its shoes, Brooks will save nearly 30 million pounds of landfill waste over a 20-year period.

mp3_runnerAll year long, thousands of runner train for this time of year: marathon season. You see them preparing themselves everywhere: running around the neighborhood, down the highway, even at the gym. Runners spend so much time preparing for fear that they will hit the wall after twenty miles.

This year, however, that is not their only concern. The New York Times reported on October 31st that USA Track & Field, the national governing body for running, banned the use of headphones and portable audio players at its official races in order to ensure safety and to prevent runners from having a competitive edge.

However, banning the use of headphones is easier said than done, especially on races that are 26 miles long, like the New York City Marathon. Some marathons do not police their fields or follow through on the rule of disqualifying contestants who use iPods and other audio players.
