Original Rock ‘N’ Roll Marathon Begins a New Decade in San Diego

san diego rock 'n' roll marathon logoOn Sunday, June 1, 2008, the original Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon in San Diego begins a new decade as one of the world’s premiere marathons. The event is known as a 26.2-mile block party with a live band at every mile along the course, hundreds of cheerleaders, themed water stations and a post-race concert, which featured SEAL in 2007.

Now is the time to set training plans and begin preparing for the entertaining fitness experience. For 20,000 runners and walkers, race weekend offers a unique opportunity to take an active vacation, accomplish personal goals, team up with friends and family, raise funds for charity or race like the King.

Runner’s World Increases Rate Base for 12th Consecutive Year; Sets Ad Revenue Record

Runner's World Magazine logoRunner’s World will increase its rate base from 630,000 to 640,000 beginning with the January 2008 issue, announced Andrew R. Hersam, Vice President and Publisher Director, Runner’s World Media Group. This year marks the 12th straight year that Runner’s World has increased its rate base, and within the last five years, the magazine has seen a 23% increase.

This increase comes on the heels of two months of record advertising sales for Runner’s World: the September 2007 issue claimed more than 79.67 pages of sold-ad space with advertising revenues of nearly $7.2 million and the October 2007 issue boasted 75.83 sold-ad pages with $6.9 million in ad revenues. From January to October of 2007, Runner’s World set a new record with $59.9 million in PIB revenue with 615 pages of sold-ad space reported in the same period.

Additionally, this marks the fifth straight year that Runner’s World ad revenue has grown by more than 10%.

Hope Runs: Two American women running to inspire social change in Kenya

Hope Runs Orphans AfricaLara Vogel and Claire A. Williams, two American women, are using running to improve the lives of Kenyan orphans.

The latest issue of Runner’s World Magazine features the inspirational story of Hope Runs, a non-profit started by Vogel and Williams, two Stanford graduates, with a mission to empower children in impoverished communities with tools of personal health, social entrepreneurship, and technology through running.

running_sunset1.jpgI was angry….and hurt. But, mostly, I was tired. Drained. The events of the day had exhausted me, both physically and emotionally..

Although it was a nice day for a run ….. cool and dry ….. and I hadn’t run for a couple of days, I really didn’t want to do it. But, I knew a run would be good for me. And I had to get off to myself. Away from the others for awhile. So, I began.

My legs felt heavy. My breathing quickly became labored, even though I kept the pace slower than usual. This was not going to be a good one.

Two miles into the run, he joined me. His presence, which I sensed suddenly, startled me. I had never known him to run a step in his life. Oh, he wasn’t unfit. He worked hard all his life. Often, under brutally hot and humid conditions that were typical of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. And, there he was. Running with me.
