“The Wisdom of Experience” Puts Masters Athletes In Front

The Denver Post has published an article giving masters athletes a little well-deserved publicity. Along with several masters athletes, the ageless ultrarunner Marshall Ulrich is featured in the article, as is Chris Carmichael, Lance Armstrong’s trainer, who said that history is witnessing a new phenomenon of athletes who train and compete over the course of a lifetime. Carmichael says, “they just keep on going. They just keep on getting more efficient with their use of oxygen. After years and years of aerobic training and competing, they are, in a sense, smarter athletes.”
Ulrich, 56-years-old and the four-time winner of Badwater, perhaps the pinnacle of extreme sports, said – after being in last place 40 miles into this year’s 135 Badwater race – was finally worried about being too old bu then realized that, “I had to give myself a little talk and say, ‘So what?’ I had to stop feeling sorry for myself. So I’m suffering. Big deal. I expect to suffer, and really, I just don’t care. You have to remember you always come back.”

Why you won’t see a world record in the upcoming World Championships or Olympics

When was the last time you saw a world record in a World Championship or Olympics Games in a middle distance or long distance event?
Sprinters take advantage of the Championship atmosphere, the multiple rounds, and faster tracks to set their world records.
You have to go back to Alberto Juantorena’s 1.43.50 800 meters at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. If you count Commonwealth Games, then Filbert Bayi’s 3.32.16 1500 meters in 1974 at Christchurch, NZ. (more on that race later)
Unfortunately, we can thank the rabbits for destroying that opportunity.

Four Minutes, an ESPN movie, is based on the true story of Roger Bannister and his quest to run a four minute mile. It is the perfect motivational film to watch the night before a big race. With an outstanding cast and a driven plot, Four Minutes is a very emotional and touching running flick.
At the opening of the movie, we are introduced to Bannister, played by Jamie Maclachlan, a British medical student who has a deep love for running. Bannister is running alongside a beach at a young age. Within minutes, he evolves into the 18-year old man that we begin to know and love. In a conversation with his father, Bannister discusses how great it would be to achieve the challenge of the four-minute mile, the most famous barrier in sports history. However, his father tells him, “Neither the heart nor the lungs could take it.” Read the rest of this entry »
