Road to Eugene 08 logo hayward fieldEugene08.com, the official site for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Track and Field is now live.

Eugene08.com is the primary source for key information for coaches, spectators, and volunteers, as well as plenty of photos and feature stories. Viewers can click on links to the competition schedule, qualifying standards, housing and transportation information as well as community links to discover more about Track Town, USA, and amenities of Eugene and the surrounding area.

A link to the Eugene 08 Festival offers information on the dynamic center adjacent to Hayward Field that will connect to the U.S. Olympic Trials competition inside the track and field venue.

Dragila, Mutola win as the Road to Eugene continues at Hayward Field

Maria Mutola Stacy Dragila and Maria Mutola captivated the crowd of 3,097 Sunday at The Road to Eugene ‘08 at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

Crowd favorite Maria Mutola, a 14-time Prefontaine champion, ran a world-leading 1 minute 58.70 seconds to win the women’s 800 meters. Two-time U.S. Indoor champion Nicole Teter ran her way to a second-place finish in 1:59.91 and 2006 U.S. Indoor champion Alice Schmidt finished third in 2:00.36. Teter and Schmidt now have the first and second fastest times by Americans so far this year.

King’s road to Eugene begins

max king 2Several hundred fans were on hand Saturday night as Max King won the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase at The Road to Eugene ‘08 at historic Hayward Field at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Ore.

The Road to Eugene ‘08 is a cooperative effort between the Local Organizing Committee for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials, USA Track & Field, and the USATF Athletes Advisory Committee. The meet is a benefit for the Professional Athletics Association (PAA), a newly formed union of professional track and field athletes.

A former Cornell standout, Max King held off Brian Olinger to win the men’s 3,000m steeplechase in a personal best 8 minutes 31.26 seconds with Olinger second in 8:31.56, they are the second and third fastest performances by Americans so far this year. For their efforts, both King and Olinger achieved the Olympic Trials “A” standard.

Ritzenhein to make 2007 track debut, Solid fields on tap at Road to Eugene ‘08

Ritzenhein_NYCM_06Solid fields have been assembled for this weekend’s second running of The Road to Eugene ‘08, to be held at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.

While the main program is scheduled for Sunday, the men’s and women’s 5000m races, along with the men’s 3000m steeplechase, will be held on Saturday evening, immediately following the conclusion of the NCAA West Regional Championships.

For distance running fans, the 2007 track debut by Dathan Ritzenhein will be of significant interest. Arriving on the heels of his victory over Craig Mottram in the Healthy Kidney 10-K in New York’s Central Park, “Ritz” will lead a 5000m field that includes Mexican rising star Juan Luis Barrios and Adam Goucher.

Road to Eugene 08 logo hayward fieldMany of the world’s best athletes will compete in 18 events Sunday, May 27 at the Road to Eugene ‘08 at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Three of the 18 events–the men’s and women’s 5,000-meter races and the men’s 3,000m steeplechase-will be run Saturday night, May 26, following the conclusion of the NCAA West Regionals at Hayward.

“Road to Eugene 08″ track meet set for this Sunday, May 27th at Hayward Field

Road to Eugene 08 logo hayward fieldThe second annual Road to Eugene 08 track meet, featuring a competitive field of prominent track and field athletes, will take place this weekend, on Sunday, May 27th at Hayward Field. Elite athletes from 15 different track and field events will compete for cash prizes that total more than $150,000. The following is a quick rundown of some of the notable favorites set to race this this weekend amidst the iconic settings of Eugene:

Sanya RichardsSanya Richards, the 21 year old, 400 meter specialist from the University of Texas. Richards has quickly developed into one of America’s best, young sprinters; lighting up the track and burning the competition on a regular basis. Last year, she went undefeated in outdoor 400m races, set the five fastest times in the world, and broke the American record with her time of 48.70 seconds at the IAAF World Cup in Athens. Her mark at the World Cup is also the seventh best on the the all-time, world list.

Symmonds to compete in Eugene for Pre Classic

nick_symmonds_att_indoor_championship_2007_the_final_sprint.jpgReigning USA Indoor men’s 800m champion Nick Symmonds will face top fields twice at his home track over the next five weeks.

Coming off his impressive win last weekend at the Osaka Grand Prix in Japan, Symmonds will compete in the friendly confines of Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., at the Road to Eugene 08 on May 27, and the Prefontaine Classic on June 10, which is the fourth event of USA Track & Field’s Outdoor Visa Championship Series.

A member of the Oregon Track Club based out of Eugene, Symmonds was the surprise runner-up at the 2006 AT&T USA Outdoor Championships in Indianapolis. He’ll face a strong field at the Pre Classic that includes reigning U.S. Outdoor champion Khadevis Robinson, who ended the 2006 season ranked #7 in the world and #1 in the U.S by Track & Field News.
