Organizers of Sunday’s 18th CVS Caremark Downtown 5-K in Providence, R.I., which serves as the USA 5 km road running championships for men and women, have released their entry lists of invited athletes.
Trying for both the open and USA titles will be national steeplechase champion and 2008 Olympian Anthony Famiglietti, 2004 Olympian Dan Browne and USA indoor 3000m champion and 2008 Olympian Matt Tegenkamp. Browne finished third overall at this event last year, behind Kenyans Simon Ndirangu and Richard Kiplagat, and won the USA title.
The women’s field is led by Olympic 10,000m bronze medalist and defending champion, Shalane Flanagan, who will try to win her third USA title this year (she has already won the national cross country and 10,000m crowns).

On the blog of Providence Journal sports reporter Carolyn Thornton, runners have been sharing their memories of the late Rhode Island marathoner, Bobby Doyle, who died earlier this month of a heart attack at 58 years old. You can read the posts, or add one of your own, at this link:

Section: News & Results
It may be America’s smallest state, but Rhode Island is getting a big new road racing festival next spring. The Cox Providence Rhode Races will be held for the first time on May 3 and 4, organizers announced yesterday.
Managed by Eident Sports Marketing, the event will feature a marathon, half-marathon and 5-K. The Cox Sports Marathon will start at the Johnson and Wales Harborside Campus, wind through portions of East Providence and Pawtucket, and finish in downtown Providence on Weybosset Street in front of Gaebe Commons, near the Providence Performing Arts Center.
“We are delighted that Cox Communications has sprinted ahead of the pack and is the title sponsor of the event,” said John Mathews, President, Eident Sports Marketing, through a media release. “This continues to emphasize Cox’s significant tradition of civic support.”

Shalane Flanagan to make rare road racing appearance

USA record holder at 5000m, Shalane Flanagan, will make a rare road racing appearance at the CVS Caremark Downtown 5-K scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 16, in Providence, R.I. The race will host the USA 5-K road running championships for both men and women.
Flanagan, 26, is in the midst of the best year of her career. In January, she smashed the USA indoor record for 3000m at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games with a sizzling 8:33.25 clocking. She followed-up with an American record for 5000m at last April’s Mt. SAC Relays (14:44.80). Flanagan also dominated the 5000m at the AT&T USA Outdoor Championships last June in Indianapolis, winning by about 17 seconds. She’s now preparing for the IAAF World Championships in Athletics where she will compete in the 5000m.
The CVS Caremark Downtown 5-K will only be Flanagan’s second road racing appearance. In 2006, she ran the Manchester Road Race in Manchester, Conn., and won by three seconds over Ireland’s Mary Cullen.

Whether you’re a first time visitor or you live and breathe Red Sox and clam chowder, “Fun on Foot in New England”, the new guide to running and walking America’s east from guide-writing pro Warwick Ford and his wife, Nola, is an invaluable resource for those seeking diverse areas, both well-known and obscure, to explore in the eastern region.
While Ford is no stranger to the world of running and walking guides, having penned the award-winning “Fun on Foot in America’s Cities”, his new guide offers a more in-depth profile of the region (including Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont) he has called home for more than 10 years. Rather than brief descriptions of common walking and running routes, this detailed resource offers a variety of paths and loops throughout New England, each one outlined with a clear map and step-by-step steering for easy navigation.
