Regarding London Marathon, Ryan Hall Says “Practice Makes Perfect”

Posted January 17th, 2008 at 5:00 PM by David Monti

Section: News & Results, Marathons

ryan hall 2007 olympic trials men's marathon in central parkRunning gracefully up and down the hills of Central Park at last November’s USA Olympic Team Trials - Men’s Marathon, Ryan Hall’s run to victory looked effortless. Although his 2:09:02 clocking was a Trials record, he surely would have run faster had he not spent most of the final mile celebrating. Nonetheless, he still won by more than two minutes, breezing through the final half of the race in 62:45, the fastest half-marathon ever run in Central Park.

But the Trials was only the first of three major marathons Hall will run over a period of less than ten months. Instead of sitting out the spring marathon season to rest his legs for the Olympic Marathon in Beijing on August 24, Hall has instead decided to contest the Flora London Marathon. In the April 13 race, the most competitive spring marathon in the world, Hall will be up against marathoning heavyweights like Martin Lel, Abderrahim Goumri, Felix Limo, Jaouad Gharib, and Stefano Baldini. He finished seventh there last year in 2:08:24, a USA debut record.

When asked in an extensive interview conducted by e-mail if he was concerned about packing three marathons into a relatively short period of time, Hall quipped: “Practice makes perfect.”

‘Personal Trainer’ and ‘Athletic Trainer’ are
NOT the Same Thing

Posted January 7th, 2008 at 9:00 AM by Jeremy Sussman

Section: News & Results, Health & Fitness, Injury & Rehab, Exercise, Drugs In Sports

NOTE: The following statement was released to major sports, health and fitness publications by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA). This press release is NOT in reference to any article, editorial, or other content published by TheFinalSprint.com or the TFS Media Network. Conversely, it is intended as a universal statement, clarification and request to the media at large on behalf of the NATA membership.

national athletic trainers association logoNATA has followed news of Roger Clemens’ admittance this week to receiving B12 and lidocaine from personal trainer Brian McNamee. NATA has read this information with interest and caution since some media have incorrectly reported that Brian McNamee is an athletic trainer.

McNamee is not, nor has he ever been an athletic trainer, as confirmed by NATA and Board of Certification (BOC) records and the New York Yankees. He is in fact a PERSONAL TRAINER and should be referred to as such and not as a “TRAINER” which can add to reader confusion. You should be aware that the term “athletic trainer” is a title-protected term by statute in 43 states.

In your coverage of this very timely sports and health issue, we appreciate any references to McNamee to be accurate. The original Mitchell Report correctly identifies McNamee as a personal trainer, and we hope media will continue to refer to him by his correct profession - PERSONAL training. An accurate description of McNamee is vitally important to the reputation and credibility of the 35,000 athletic trainers working with sports medicine patients and clients.

Jon Rankin; the inaugural member of TheFinalSprint.com’s
Elite Athlete Blog Series. Make sure to check back every other Wednesday for Jon’s latest entry.

Jon Rankin at the 2007 Continental Airlines Fifth avenue MileMy name is Jon Rankin and I’m a professional Track & Field athlete for the United States of America. My sponsor is Nike, Inc. My primary events are the 1-mile and 1500 meters. I also compete in any event from 800 meters to 5000 meters on the track, up to 15 kilometers on the road and in the sport of Cross Country.

The end of the 2007 season marked my 10th year as a distance runner and it turned out to be my most significant season thus far. A little over one year ago I sustained a full fracture to the 3rd metatarsal of my left foot during the USATF National Championships. Psychologically the injury was devastating for me. I struggled to overcome the break I sustained to my spirit more so than I did the break in my foot. From the moment my foot broke in June of 2006 until the following June of 2007 I experienced a roller coaster of emotions. It would be twelve months before I got back on the track and competed.

crossing finish line boston marathonCompleting a marathon puts ordinary runners in the company of elite athletes—finishing a 26.2-mile run is an impressive accomplishment.

But you don’t have to be an elite athlete to join the ranks of marathoners around the world. With dedication and training, most runners can complete a marathon—and then have the satisfaction of being able to say, “A marathon” Yeah, I’ve done that.”

So don’t shy away from a marathon because it seems too hard, too long, too painful. With the right attitude and a good training regimen, it’s just 26.2 miles away.
