Section: News & Results, Marathons, Track & Field

iaaf 2007 world championships in athletics osaka japan logoThe meet of the season is nearly upon us … The 11th IAAF World Championships in Athletics begin in less than three days!!!

Here’s a list of all the finals in Osaka and the local (Japanese) time/day when they will take place (Note: Don’t worry! … We’ll provide a timetable of the events in EST for all of our American readers in the next day or two). The action begins right away on day one as the world marathon champion is crowned a little more than 2 hours after the 7:00am start time. Mubarak Hassan Shami of Qatar, with a world-leading time of 2:07:19 in 2007, should be the favorite, although 9 other men have broken 2:08 this season. Nine days (and 26 events) later, the meet culminates with the men’s 4×400m relay. The United States, having won the gold medal in the last 7 world championships (and 8 out of 10 total gold medals), should easily win that last event.

DAY ONE
8/25 @ 7:00 - Marathon (Men)
8/25 @ 20:20 - Shot Put (Men)
8/25 @ 21:50 - 10,000m (Women)

TFS Book Review:
U.S. Multi-Sport Directory

Section: Motivation, Books, Special Features, TFS Reviews

us-multi-sport-directory-2007.gifThe U.S. Multi-Sport Directory, now in it’s fourth edition, is an excellent resource for passionate athletes looking to stay fit and have some extra fun on their next road trip or vacation.

The popular publication, co-authored by triathletes Warren Knoll and Hubie Krawczyk, offers 260 pages of event listings and other helpful information for endurance athletes. It is color-coded and organized by region (ex. - Pacific, Northeast, International, etc.); listing the pertinent information for a majority of the year’s triathlons, duathlons, marathons, ultra marathons, adventure races and cycling events.

The authors have also compiled listings of running camps, coaches, clinics, new products and even some tips for race directors. Future editions would benefit from the inclusion of additional race information (course descriptions, amenities, etc.), such as the the details offered about running routes in Fun on Foot in America’s Cities.

Why you should run faster

runner_success2.jpgIf you don’t run very fast in practice, you won’t be able to run very fast in races.

At the University of Copenhagen, Danish scientists studied experienced runners who had been running 60 miles a week at a fast pace. One group was told to cut their mileage in half to only 30 miles a week, but to run a series of around 50 to 100 yard dashes as fast as they could. The other group continued running 60 miles a week at a fast pace. Runners who ran fewer miles at a faster pace had a 7 percent improvement in their body’s maximal ability to take in and use oxygen.

First Marathon Uncertainties

Jim Fortner is a weekly, guest contributor to TFS. Make sure to also check out his own personal running and advice site: “Jim2’s Running Page”.

runningman.JPGIt’s perfectly natural for a runner to have a lot of uncertainty while training for his or her first marathon. There are so many things to question yourself about …

Am I running enough miles? Am I getting enough rest? Should my longest run be 18 or 28 miles….or somewhere in-between? How many 20 mile runs should I do? Should I structure walking breaks into my long runs? Should I do speedwork? If so, what kind and how much? Should I use sports gels and/or powerbars during my long runs? And on….and on!

Different marathon training plans or “experts” will give you conflicting answers. All are right and all are wrong for your specific needs!

Crunch Time - ‘Worry, Set, Go!’

Posted May 23rd, 2006 at 8:00 AM by Arthur Rosen

Section: Running & Training, Motivation, Training Tips

traffic lightI train endless hours climbing up and down the hills, the speedwork, the tempo runs, the long runs, the recovery days. How many miles did I log this week? Sixty? Seventy? The humidity got to me this week, I felt like I was dragging myself. The rain helped cool me off but it did raise some blisters that will need my attention for at least a week. My legs aren’t fully recovered from last week’s mileage, my knees hurt, what’s that pain I feel in my arch? Will my lower back ever stop hurting? Will it heal by marathon day? I must go on. I’ve put too much into my training not to run the marathon next month. I swear it will be the last one. I will be prepared. I am ready to prove to myself once again how much I have in me, that I am ready, that I will be the best that I can be.

“The marathon is the reward for all of this training” they say.

Finally it’s taper time. Let’s bring down the mileage. I need that. My legs so badly need that. I am starting to feel a bit antsy as I’m not running as much as I have the last few weeks. I’m feeling fat. I want so badly to run more and damn the taper! Stay lean, stay healthy, keep hydrating, keep that “edge”. Did I carb-load enough? Did I eat the right foods? Did I do the past eighteen weeks all right, will someone tell me if I did it right damn it! I don’t know! I’m confident but I’m nervous, so nervous that I hardly got any sleep last night. Drink, go to the bathroom, drink some more, go to the bathroom some more. Are my laces knotted right? Is the chip on properly? Everyone standing around me is running, stretching, drinking. Why does everyone look more fit than me? Am I really deserving to run in this race? I’m feeling pumped, my stomach is in a knot, but the day is here and it’s a perfect day. Pace right, drink often, run your race. Ready, set, go!
