America’s best to compete at U.S. Olympic Team Trials:
50 km Race Walk

usa olympic team trials 50km race walk logoKevin Eastler, Curt Clausen, Philip Dunn, Matt Boyles and Ray Sharp headline the field Saturday at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials - 50 km Race Walk at the Miami-Dade County village of Palmetto Bay in Florida, where U.S. Olympic Team berths will be at stake.

A purse of over $55,000 awaits the top finishers of the 50 kilometer (31 mile) walk, the longest track and field event at the Olympic Games. First place will be worth more than $15,000 with the top eight finishers guaranteed prize money.

The local organizing committee is led by event director Robin Beamon from the Miami-Dade Parks and Recreation Department. ING Miami Marathon race director Robert Pozo will be the technical director of the race.

Eastler, Vaill win
Ron Zinn Awards

Kevin Eastler united states race walkingUSA Track & Field has announced that Kevin Eastler and Teresa Vaill are the winners of the 2007 Captain Ron Zinn Awards that honor the outstanding U.S. male and female race walkers of the year. Formal presentation of the awards will take place December 1 in ceremonies held in conjunction with USATF’s Annual Meeting at the Sheraton Waikiki in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The annual awards commemorate the achievements of Captain Ronald Zinn, who lost his life in combat during the Vietnam War. Zinn was a member of the U.S. Olympic Team at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo. His sixth-place finish in the 20 km race walk is one of America’s all-time top international race walking performances.

Forgues, Vergara Twins Named 2007 Henry Laskau Award Winners

Lauren ForguesLauren Forgues and twins Ricardo and Roberto Vergara, have been named the 2007 Henry Laskau Award winners. Now in its fourth year, the Laskau Awards are presented annually to the top USA junior male and female race walkers. The awards will be presented during ceremonies December 1 in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The Laskau Awards commemorate the three-time Olympian’s accomplishments not only as an athlete, but as an inspirational master of the sport who promoted race walking at many levels, including converting numerous runners into race walkers. Laskau, who passed away in May of 2000, was the second race walker ever inducted into the National Track & Field Hall of Fame.

Vaill, Green win USA
1 Hour Race Walk titles

USA Track & Field LogoTeresa Vaill and Mark Green were the respective women’s and men’s winners Sunday at the 2007 USATF 1 Hour Race Walk Championships at the Bentley College track in Waltham, Mass.

A 2004 Olympian and three-time USA 20 km champion, Vaill won the women’s national championship leading from start to finish in walking a total of 12,501 meters within the hour-long time limit. Maria Michta was the runner-up three laps behind Vaill with 11,356m. Diana Rado was third overall, winning the U.S. junior title with 11,254m, with Lauren Forgues finishing fourth overall and second in the junior competition with 11,249 meters.

In winning the men’s title, Mark Green set a pending U.S. masters 50-54 age-group record with his final distance of 12,225 meters. Mike Kazmierczak was the runner-up with 12,094m, with Roberto Vergara winning the junior competition and finishing third overall in walking 11,917 meters.

Paul Johnson, who placed 15th in the men’s competition, set a pending U.S. masters M70-74 record with his measurement of 10,250 meters.
