girl running in the citySometimes, it feels like nothing could be more rewarding than a long run in the fresh spring air. Your legs are weightless, the day is windless, and the minutes seem to fly by.

But what about those other days? You know, when you feel like you crawled out of bed to fall flat on the road, or your same old route feels blah and you can’t stop checking your watch. How do you to combat boredom in your running routine, keep things interesting, and sustain a challenging fitness lifestyle that leaves you wondering what’s next, instead of counting the seconds until you can hit the showers and grab a coffee?

Stare Down the Demons: Get psyched up for your next run!

rocky.jpgWe all have moments when we simply don’t feel like working out. It’s not always easy to lace up the shoes, walk out to the car in the cold, or wake up for a 5 a.m. run.

There are a number of demons staring us down: a sour attitude; the comfortable couch we dared to sit on after an exhausting work day; the cozy bed with a warm, enveloping partner; or just plain laziness. We can all agree that while we may not always feel up for a workout, we are thrilled with how we feel at the finish. The natural high kicks in. This is why it’s vital to have strategies for dealing with the fight.

I want to highlight three ideas I find useful. You can think of them as ways to trick your mind into doing what your body knows it needs. Perhaps all of the strategies don’t appeal to you. That’s okay. Pick one and experiment.

Podcast 42: Interview with Podrunner’s DJ Steve Boyett

Podrunner 200x200Episode 42 of The Final Sprint Podcast features my interview with Podrunner’s DJ Steve Boyett.

Ok, ok … I know what you’re thinking: “Why is a music DJ being interviewed on TFS Podcast?”

Good question … A few months ago I received an email from a reader and fellow runner about a workout, music podcast called “Podrunner”. He was raving about these music podtrac_survey_120x60_v2mixes and swore that they were responsible for his multitude of recent PR’s. At the time, I didn’t think much of it - but that all changed as a plethora of similarly positive emails came rolling in from readers all over the world.

So I decided to look into Podrunner and learned that, believe it or not, it was nearing it’s 5-millionth download and earned an iTunes People Choice Award in 2006. Although I was still quite skeptical that it would benefit my training, I actually got pretty hooked; finding these hour-long, fixed-BPM workout mixes to be an excellent source of motivation on those long runs and during intense workouts.

Download the podcast to hear DJ Steve discuss Podrunner; how his music mixes are helping to motivate, and even change the lives of, an eclectic group of runners and other athletes; the training benefits of music; and much more!
