97th ING Bay to Breakers Returns on Sunday in San Francisco
Posted May 14th, 2008 at 12:00 PM by David Monti
Section: News & Results, Road Racing
Part parade, part fashion show, and part road race, the 97th ING Bay to Breakers returns to the streets of San Francisco on Sunday, and organizers expect some 70,000 runners and walkers (about half of them unregistered) to take part.
Up front, the race is serious business. Elite athlete coordinator Josh Muxen has assembled a strong field to chase a $74,000 prize money purse, including a special $25,000 ING Battle to the Breakers bonus which will be awarded to the first athlete to cross the finish line. That could be a man or it could be a woman; women are given a four minute and 40 second headstart based on the difference between the male (33:42) and female (38:22) course records.
In addition, there is a $5000 bonus for the first man and first woman to reach the top of Hayes Street Hill, a beast of a climb which begins at the two mile mark on Franklin Street, rises 201 feet, and covers a distance of 0.69 miles. Athletes can pocket the bonus as long as they also finish in the top-20.

Lel Takes London Record in History-Making Race
Posted April 14th, 2008 at 10:20 AM by David Monti
Section: News & Results, Marathons
Like a bull at a rodeo, the men’s field at the 28th Flora London Marathon bolted out of the gate with reckless abandon. The athletes who were strong enough to hang on were rewarded with personal and national records, while others were thrown to the street, their hopes of victory incinerated by the fast pace.
But when the dust had settled at the grand finish line on The Mall, race director David Bedford’s bold experiment in aggressive pacemaking yielded –by several measures– the fastest men’s marathon of all-time, with three men cracking 2:06:00, and six men breaking 2:07:00, for the first time ever in a single race. Those times came after a breathtaking 62:12 first half which left some of the world’s best marathoners well off the pace.
“It was crazy,” said last year’s runner-up, Abderrahim Goumri, of the 14:21 (downhill) first 5-K.
But the fast pace, coupled with a cold and drenching rain which fell from the 18th through the 23rd miles, did little to knock defending champion Martin Lel (Pictured above) off of his game.

Gilmore Wins, Sets Course Record at Surf City USA Half-Marathon
Posted February 6th, 2008 at 12:45 PM by Adam Jacobs
Section: News & Results, Marathons
Peter Gilmore [MarathonGuide.com] of San Mateo, CA started his year and preparation for April’s Flora London Marathon with a victory at the Surf City USA Half Marathon on Sunday.
Gilmore edged Russia’s Dmitry Safronov by 11 seconds and set a new course record despite the poor weather conditions with a time of 1:03:53.
Although the race was largely a tune-up for London, Gilmore’s record-setting time and first place finish were welcome successes after being forced to drop out of the U.S. Olympic Men’s Marathon Trials last November due to illness.
With a win and successful 2008 debut under his belt, Gilmore now faces the arduous task of going up against an extremely competitive elite men’s field in London that includes reigning World and Olympic marathon champions Luke Kibet and Stefano Baldini, former world marathon record holder Paul Tergat, defending London and 2005 champion Martin Lel, world half-marathon record holder Sammy Wanjiru, former double World Champion Jaouad Gharib, and fellow Americans Ryan Hall and Olympic silver medalistMeb Keflezighi.

Elite Athlete Profile:
PETER GILMORE
Posted November 3rd, 2007 at 7:00 AM by thefinalsprint.com
Section: News & Results, Marathons, Olympics
Conquering a field of top-level runners to earn a spot on Team USA is the goal of every athlete at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Men’s Marathon. But Peter Gilmore will have a second goal in mind when he lines up in Midtown on November 3: conquering New York. Because for all his success in races across America and around the globe, Gilmore has not always shown his best form in the world’s premier city.
In his most recent New York appearance, the NYC Half-Marathon Presented by NIKE on August 5, Gilmore finished a disappointing 15th in 1:05:06— four and a half minutes behind the top American, Abdi Abdirahman. That was a frustrating outcome for Gilmore, 30, of San Mateo, California, who had specifically entered the NYC Half as part of a strategy to get used to New York before the Trials race.

U.S. Olympic Trials- Men’s Marathon Preview
Posted October 31st, 2007 at 12:15 PM by Jared Markowitz
Section: News & Results, Marathons
It’s almost here. After years of preparation and months of carefully tuned training, America’s finest men’s marathoners will toe the line this Saturday in a showdown that will determine the U.S. team in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Let’s step back for a minute and think about how big this race is. In most countries the Olympic marathon team is determined by a committee, freeing the elite athletes from the stress of earning their spot but ruling out the underdogs as well. The U.S. Olympic team, however, is chosen through an open trial race where anyone who meets the qualifying standards may enter. Dreams are realized or dashed, careers are made or broken, and thousands of miles are rewarded or second-guessed based on one race. With so much at stake and with the unpredictable nature of the marathon, the Olympic Marathon Trials are one of the largest spectacles in American sports.
