Section: Gear & Apparel, Gadgets & Acces.

Nokia 5500 sports music editionThe Nokia 5500 Sport has been improved and dubbed the Music Edition by adding a 512 MB microSD card for up to 375 songs, a fitness carrying strap, bicycle holder, and sports headset wrapped in a energetic color.

The carrying strap allows the 5500 to be worn around the waist or strapped around an arm. The sports headset also offers handsfree convenience for music and conversations with an athletic, over-the-ear design. Tunes can be transferred to the handset from your PC via the Nokia Music Manager software.

Don’t forget about the integrated pedometer, telling you the distance travelled and calories burned during a run. Other activities, such as a cycling or cross-country skiing can also monitor distance and calories with an optional GPS accessory. Results of workout routines can then be transferred from the Nokia 5500 Sport Music Edition to a PC to follow individual progress (Can someone pleae say that the Nike+ has been a hit!).

Posted September 23rd, 2006 at 5:00 AM by Adam Jacobs

Section: Running & Training, Gear & Apparel, Miscellaneous, Product Reviews, Special Features, TFS Reviews

Check out our review of Leading Example’s Running Log Software. You can also try it for yourself and let us know what you think. They offer a free trial download (although that version will not contain many of the features that are available in the full version).

Product: Leading Example Coaching’s Running Log Software
Price: $9.99
Rating: Average 6.1/10.0
Pros: Good for beginners, training log, mileage/pace calculations, progress graphs, shoe tracker, goal setter
Cons: Cannot calculate calories burned, insufficient for advanced runners, incompatible with portable mileage trackers, incompatible with Google Pedometer, design flaws
Overall: L.E.’s Running Software can be helpful and is certainly more effective than a mere paper training book or journal. However, this product is not worth the money for advanced and very competitive runners.

Performance - 5.75 The software is capable of tracking your mileage, graphing your progress and also allows you to set goals. One feature I particularly like is that it allows you to accurately track how many miles you have put on your running shoes. Wondering why this is important? Then check out: When to ‘Kick’ Your Old ‘Kicks’)

L.E. asserts, “Whether you’re a serious runner or a weekend jogger. This fantastic Running Log will help you.” However, after reviewing this product I believe that most serious runners and exercise enthusiasts would likely be disappointed.

FYI: An EASY and FREE Way to Measure Your Next Route

USATF Map It Tracking your mileage is always a great idea – but it can often be tedious and time-consuming. If you don’t want to spend several hundred dollars on a device like a Garmin Forerunner and your sick and tired of measuring your routes via your car’s pedometer – well your now in luck. Thanks to the wonderful technology provided by Google maps and the Google satellites, there are now several easy to use and reliable mapping tools on the internet.

These sites allow you to use your mouse to trace your routes on a map and save them. In addition, many of them allow you to share your routes with others. This is especially handy if you are hoping to go for a quick run when you are away from home (i.e. – on a family vacation or a business trip) so that you can use other people’s saved routes for your own stress-relieving run.

Please beware that there are several sites out there that require monthly fees or service charges.

However, with the following three sites – you will get reliability – and best of all . . . they are 100% FREE!!!

These sites have become incredibly popular for runners around the country. Since trying them out I have become a huge fan and a regular user. Try them and let me know what you think. I believe you’ll find them to be just as useful and easy-to-use as I have. ENJOY!
