New Finish Line For Peachtree Road Race

Atlanta’s unprecedented drought had forced city officials to restrict the use of Piedmont Park, leaving the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Peachtree Road Race high and dry with no finish area. The massive July 4 event is the world’s largest 10-K.
But today, race organizers announced that they had found a new finish area for the 39th edition of the event. The Atlanta Track Club, the not-for-profit which founded and organizes the race, announced that the race will now have one additional turn and will finish at the intersection of Juniper and Ponce de Leon in midtown Atlanta. The field of over 55,000 runners will then walk on city streets to the Civic Center parking area where the awards stage, family meeting area, and sponsor village will be located.

USATF Fills Men’s 10-K Championship Void

When their annual convention closed last December in Honolulu, USA Track & Field had a noticeable void in their national championships calendar: there was no 10-K road championship for men. That competition was hosted successfully last year by the Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta, Ga., but because the Peachtree takes place every year on July 4 — right in the middle of the U.S. Olympic Trials — hosting the championship there was a non-starter for 2008.
Enter the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10-K in Richmond, Va., one of the fastest growing road races in the United States. Last year’s edition saw 20,587 finishers, an increase of 25% from a year earlier. USATF announced today that they had awarded the 10-K championship for men to this event, which will be held for the 9th time on April 5.

Abdirahman, who won his third track title last week at the AT&T USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Indianapolis, will face-off with 2007 USA Half-Marathon Champion and American Record holder Ryan Hall (Big Bear Lake, Calif.); 2006 USA 25 km champion and American Record holder Fernando Cabada (Bloomington, Ind.), and Brian Sell (Rochester Hills, Mich.), the 2006 USA Half-Marathon champion.

‘07-’08 PRRO Championship bonus reaches $30,000
Posted May 12th, 2007 at 8:00 AM by David Monti
Section: News & Results
A $30,000 bonus awaits any athlete who can win two of the Professional Road Running Organization (PRRO) running circuit events plus the 2008 Peachtree Road Race when the 2007-2008 season kicks off with the Utica Boilermaker 15-K on Sunday, July 8.
In addition to the Boilermaker, the circuit includes the 2008 World’s Best 10-K in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on February 24, 2008; the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile in Washington, D.C., on April 6, 2008; and the 2008 Lilac Bloomsday 12-K in Spokane, Wash., on May 4, 2008, plus the PRRO Championship at the 2008 Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta, GA on July 4, 2008. The bonus is paid out in addition to the prize money at the individual events. The bonus is split if an eligible male and female both win the Championship at Peachtree.
Since no athlete won two or more of the five PRRO events during the 2006-2007 season, the bonus was increased by $5000 to the current $30,000 level.
