Forgues, Vergara Twins Named 2007 Henry Laskau Award Winners

Lauren ForguesLauren Forgues and twins Ricardo and Roberto Vergara, have been named the 2007 Henry Laskau Award winners. Now in its fourth year, the Laskau Awards are presented annually to the top USA junior male and female race walkers. The awards will be presented during ceremonies December 1 in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The Laskau Awards commemorate the three-time Olympian’s accomplishments not only as an athlete, but as an inspirational master of the sport who promoted race walking at many levels, including converting numerous runners into race walkers. Laskau, who passed away in May of 2000, was the second race walker ever inducted into the National Track & Field Hall of Fame.

Interview with NCAA 400m Champ ADAM STEELE

adam steele runner university of minnesota track and track ncaa 400m championAdam Steele was the NCAA Outdoor Champion in 400m and also a Pan Am Gold Medalist.

Q. Can you explain how you first got starting in the sport of running?

A. I began running around the 7th grade, mostly because my older brother competed. I didn’t really focus on running until sophomore Track, Junior year of Cross country.

Q. When did you first realize your running was some of the most elite in the country?

A. Probably in 2003 after I won the NCAA championship. Until then I was planning on ending my career after college.

Team USA picks up 4 more medals at Pan Am Games

2007 Pan American Games Logo Rio De Janeiro BrazilMary Jane Harrelson and Catherine “Cack” Ferrell each claimed a silver medal and LaRon Bennett and Rubin Williams each picked up a bronze Friday at the 2007 Pan American Games at Joao Havelange Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The 2003 Pan Am silver medalist in Santo Domingo, Harrleson (Knoxville, Tenn.) once again won silver in the women’s 1,500 meters finishing in 4 mintues 15.24 seconds. Harrelson had hung on 2006 U.S. Outdoor runner-up Lindsay Gallo’s (Freehold, N.J.) shoulder through most of the race. Gallo, who led the race through 1,300m, finished sixth in 4:18.87.
