With Dominating Performances, Tadese and Kiplagat Threepeat in Rio

IAAF World Half Marathon Championships 2008 Rio de JaneiroProducing a pair of runaway victories, Zersenay Tadese and Lornah Kiplagat each collected their third consecutive victories at the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships today in Rio de Janeiro.

Running in warm conditions, Tadese won handily in 59:56, nearly two minutes ahead of Kenyan Patrick Makau Musyoki (1:01:54), who also finished second a year ago in Udine, Italy.

In full control of the race from the gun, the Kenyan-born Dutchwoman Kiplagat won in 1:08:37, well ahead of Ethiopian Aselefech Mergia (1:09:57).

Boston Marathon Finalizes Elite Fields

Boston Marathon LogoJohn Hancock Financial, the principal sponsor of the Boston Marathon, announced today that they had finalized the elite fields for the 112th edition of America’s oldest marathon, set for Monday, April 21.

Most of the field had been announced previously, but a noteworthy addition is women’s course record holder, Margaret Okayo, who hasn’t run a full marathon since finishing 9th in London in 2006 in 2:29:16. She did, however, run as a pacemaker in the Milano City Marathon last December, helping teammate Pamela Chepchumba, run a personal best 2:25:36.

McDougal runs indoor 5000m in 13:45
Josh McDougal, a senior at Libery and winner ofthe 2007 NCAA Cross-Country Championships, ran an indoor 5000m time of 13:45.16 at the Liberty Kickoff. His time was good for first place and it earned him an automatic birth in the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships which will be held at the University of Arkansas on March 14-15, 2008. Wanjiru Runs 2:06:39 Debut Marathon in Fukuoka
Kenyan Samuel Wanjiru, the world record holder in the half-marathon, won his debut marathon in Fukuoka with an outstanding 2:06:39, a course record time. Deriba Merga of Ethiopia finished 2nd in 2:06:50, a PB by over 6 1/2 minutes and also under the previous course record of 2:06:51. Atsushi Sato of Japan was third in 2:07:13, also a PB. Wanjiru’s time is the 3rd fastest in the world in 2007 and ties him with fellow Kenyans William Kipsang and Felix Kimo as the 28th fastest marathoner of all time.Read more at: [IAAF]

1:06:25 Half-Marathon World Record for Kiplagat in Udine

Lornah KiplagatIn a largely solo performance, Lornah Kiplagat broke the world record for the half marathon, clocking 1:06:25 at the World Road Running Championships in Udine, Italy, today.

In retaining her title, Kiplagat shattered the previous record of 1:06:44 set by South African Elena Meyer in 1999.

“Everything just went perfect today,” Kiplagat said. “With four kilometers left, I thought there was a possibility (for a world record).”

En route, the Kenyan-born Dutchwoman also broke her own world record for 20 kilometers, clocking 1:02:57, 24 seconds faster that the record she set at last year’s World Road Running Championships in Debrecen, Hungary.

Kibet, Chepchumba Claim Victory at Philadelphia Distance Run

Kenyan Julius Kibet earned top honors for the second time at Sunday’s 30th Philadelphia Distance Run, winning the men’s race in 1 hour, 2 minutes, 2 seconds. Pamela Chepchumba, also from Kenya, won the women’s race in 1:08:45, one of the world’s fastest half-marathon times for women (and the best in the U.S.) this year.

It took a few miles for the men’s professional field to warm up to the clear and cool morning, recording their first sub-five minute mile at mile three (4:52). The pack of 27 men weaved through Center City, before doubling back onto Benjamin Franklin Parkway, to the cheers of thousands of runners who were taking their initial steps on the course.
