Josh McDougal named USATF Athlete of the Week

Josh McDougal Liberty UniversityJosh McDougal has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after winning the men’s NCAA Division I Cross Country Championship Monday, November 19 at the LaVern Gibson Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind.

A senior at Liberty University, McDougal out-kicked Galen Rupp of Oregon in the men’s 10 km race in a thrilling homestretch battle, crossing the finish line in 29 minutes 22 seconds.

Rupp finished just one second behind in 29:23. McDougal is the first Liberty athlete to win an NCAA Cross Country title.

Craig Masback on Ryan Shay: What More Can We Do?
In a USA Today article Christine Brennan asks USATF CEO Craig Masback the question: What responsibilities, if any, do sports governing bodies have in preventing tragedies such as this? And now that this has happened, a death in the Olympic marathon trials, should anything change?
Masback answers: “We’re really looking to the medical community to answer that question. If there’s something we can do that would reliably stop something like this from happening, we would absolutely do it. Read more at: [USA Today]

Oregon X-C Coach Lananna on NCAA West Regionals: Top Two For Both Men and Women
University of Oregon Cross-Country coach Vin Lananna has an ambitious goal for his Ducks this coming Saturday: “We’ll run what we have to run in order to be in the top two for both the men and women.” A top-2 finish would guarantee both the men’s a women’s team a slot in the upcoming NCAA Cross-Country Championships. ??:??:??Honor System for 2,300 NYC Marathoners
A timing glitch caused by 3 minutes of frequency interference affected 2,300 participants (some 5.8% of the total runners) in last Sunday’s New York City Marathon. Organizers are now relying on the honor system to get the affected runners to tell them how long it took them to cross the starting line. Read more at: [Bloomberg.com]

Cross Country: Division I Rankings, Men

USTFCCCA LogoBolstered by the return of Galen Rupp, Oregon won its second straight Pacific-10 Conference title on Saturday and swept the first-place votes in this week’s Division I men’s cross country poll.

Rupp finished second to teammate Shadrack Kiptoo-Biwott as Oregon scored 55 points to win the Pac-10 title in Corvallis, Ore., defeating Stanford (55) and Cal (70). The Ducks received all 13 votes in the poll released today by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Kinyanjui Runs 3-Minute PB in Beijing Marathon
Kenyan Nephat Kinyanjui bested his previous PB of 2:11:18 by over three minutes in winning the 2007 Bejing Marathon in 2:08:09. Nineteen-year-old Chen Rong won the women’s race in 2:27:05. Read more at: [IAAF]

Kalovics Defends 2006 Win with 2:28:17 Victory in Carpi Marathon
Hungarian Aniko Kalovics, even though she was slowed a bit by problems with her Achilles tendon and with tonsilitis still managed to win her 2nd Carpi Marathon in 2 years with a 2:28:17 win. Kenyan Noah Serem led the men with a PB 2:11:18. Read more at: [IAAF]

Oregon Men and Women Win Team Titles at Beaver Classic
The University of Oregon men’s cross-country team, the #1 ranked team in the nation according to the USTFCCCA poll, took the team title at the Beaver Classic with a near-perfect 16 points. The women Ducks also won the team title, scoring a perfect 15 points.

Wallace Spearmon won his 3rd race in 5 days with a 100/200m double at the Colorful Daegu Athletics Meeting in Daegu, South Korea. His time in the 200m was 19.88, the 7th fastest time in the world in 2007. He ran a 10.11 in the 100m. Read more at: [IAAF]

Lance Armstrong Plans to Run Another Sub 3 in NYC
Legendary cyclist Lance Armstrong has announced that he will run his 2nd NYC marathon this November and will try to break 3 hours again. Considering that he is 5 lbs. lighter than he was last year and is running without shinsplints, he will probably do considerably better than that.
