Defending Boston Champion Lidiya Grigoryeva is set to compete against 2006 winner Rita Jeptoo, two-time runner-up Jelena Prokopcuka and a new generation of international talent.

The blend of athletes with experience on the course and those new to the challenges of the hilly Hopkinton to Boston route should lead to a highly competitive race. Collectively the group has won 18 international marathons in the past three years and the top nine contenders have less than a three-minute differential in their personal best times. In addition, the athletes will be vying for a top Boston showing to secure a position on their country’s Olympic teams.

Nick Symmonds elite athlete blogThere comes a time during every runner’s training where they are blind-sided by an unexpected setback; a sore muscle, a blizzard rolling through, a cold or flu. These are always difficult to deal with and I definitely feel that one’s ability to cope with setbacks reflects the kind of overall athlete that person is.

Over Christmas break I felt like I was doing a pretty good job of managing these challenges. I had a sore hip and through icing and heating was able to maintaining my mileage. There was a snow storm and though I had to shift my workouts from the track to the streets, I persevered. However, when I got back to Eugene I was laid low by one of the worst gastrointestinal viruses I’ve ever had.

Nick Symmonds elite athlete blogWell, it is December 31st and it is a momentous day for me for several reasons.

First of all, I turned 24 yesterday. Normally birthdays come and go for me and I don’t spend a whole lot of time thinking about them. While I certainly don’t feel old I am realizing that my body is almost fully matured and I am starting to enter the years that male middle distance runners typically peak. I’ve begun to notice that I get out of shape much faster than I used to, but also that I get back into shape faster; a rare combination of a slower metabolism and legs that have run thousands of miles.

This is also a huge day for me because it is New Year’s Eve. Tomorrow I will return to Eugene and will begin the process of sharpening up for the indoor season. My first race is in 26 days and I want to start the season out with a big win in Boston. But first, I will enjoy New Year’s like everyone else; one last hurrah before 2008!
