Strong Group of Americans Headed to ING NYCM

A strong group of American athletes will see how they stack up against some of the world’s best runners when the line up for the 38th edition of the ING New York City Marathon on Sunday, Nov. 2. Their burden is great as no American has crossed the finish line first here since 1982, but this is a determined group.
“Everybody knows that New York is the race to run in the fall,” said three-time Olympian Abdi Abdirahman of Tucson, Ariz., in a statement. “I know the competition will be really tough, but I’m going there to try to win it. That’s how I always run.”
Abdirahman, who has a marathon personal best of 2:08:56 set in Chicago in 2006, will be running New York for the third time. He finished a disappointing 14th in his marathon debut here in 2004 when his Achilles tendon ruptured around the 20 mile mark. Like a racing car with a flat tire, he limped to the finish line in 2:17:09. Undeterred, he came back the following year and set a then personal best 2:11:34 to finish fifth. Abdirahman ran the Olympic Trials marathon here last November but dropped out.

World marathon record holder Paula Radcliffe said today that she would be on the starting line of the ING New York City Marathon on Sunday, Nov. 2, to defend her title. The two-time New York champion, who won a thrilling duel with three-time Olympic medalist Gete Wami at last year’s race, said she has bounced back from a stress fracture of her left femur which put her on crutches for three weeks and short on preparation for the Beijing Olympic Marathon last August. In Beijing she bravely limped to a 23rd place finish.
“Hopefully, good shape, and good enough shape to commit to running the race,” Radcliffe told reporters on an international conference call today when asked about her fitness. She added: “I’m pleased to come back to New York, defend my title and run well there.”
Radcliffe’s participation in the race was confirmed by New York Road Runners president and CEO, Mary Wittenberg.

Mikitenko Will Not Chase WMM Title in New York

In a surprising development, newly crowned real,- Berlin Marathon champion Irina Mikitenko said she would not attempt to win the 2007/2008 World Marathon Majors series title and the attendant USD 500,000 award by competing in the ING New York City Marathon on Sunday, Nov. 2. The three-time Olympian is currently tied with Ethiopian Gete Wami for the series lead with 65 points, and Wami’s participation in New York has already been announced.
“Money isn’t everything,” said Mikitenko at a press conference in Berlin today. “I’ve already done very well, winning London and Berlin. If you’re in a sport at this level, you need goals and targets, and my goal is next year’s World Championships marathon here in Berlin. The most important thing is to win. If you win, money follows.”

The women’s field for the ING New York City Marathon is taking shape, race organizers said here today, as five top women were announced for the Sunday, Nov. 2 race.
Three veterans –Gete Wami of Ethiopia, Lyubov Morgunova of Russia and Hayley Haining of Great Britain– have joined the field, as have rising stars Kim Smith of New Zealand and Dire Tune of Ethiopia. That line-up gives the race the champions of the marathons in Berlin in 2007, and Boston and Rotterdam in 2008.
“What a cast of stars we have gathered as, once again, the leading ladies of the marathon world will be out front and center on race day,” said New York Road Runners president and CEO Mary Wittenberg in a prepared statement. “With more announcements to follow, it’s already a potent mix.”

World Marathon Majors Fall Season Set Open in Berlin
Posted September 17th, 2008 at 9:02 AM by David Monti
Section: News & Results, Marathons
With the Olympic Games results now in the books, the World Marathon Majors is set to open the Fall season at the real,-BERLIN-MARATHON on Sunday, September 28. Six athletes are still in the running for a half share of the $1,000,000 annual prize.
On the men’s side, Kenyans Martin Lel and Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot are the last two athletes in contention for the 2007/2008 title. Lel has 76 points to Cheruiyot’s 55. Lel has already scored in four events (the maximum number allowed in a two-year scoring period). Should he choose to race again, Lel could still improve his score by improving upon his 5th-place finish in the Olympic Games because an athlete may have his best four results count. For Cheruiyot to defend his championship he will first have to recover from the injury which forced him to withdraw from the Olympics. Then, only a victory –coupled with Lel failing to add to his lead– would give Cheruiyot the title.

Amsterdam Marathon Ranked Number One For Speed

Section: News & Results, Marathons
Despite World Record holder Paula Radcliffe’s best efforts to tear up the tarmac in New York, the Amsterdam Marathon remains at the top of the World rankings of fastest marathon cities of 2007.
Frankfurt was fast enough to challenge the all-time fastest city Berlin, but Amsterdam has shaken off it’s laid back image to hold on to it’s dominant 1.83 minute lead at the top of the rankings.
The course that saw Kenyan winner Emmanuel Mutai smash his personal best from 2:13.06 to 2:06.29, also brought national success for Kamiel Maase, who bettered his own Dutch record by 10 seconds as the first European home in ninth place at 2:08.21.
2007 Rankings:
(Average times for the World rankings of fastest Marathon cities are calculated by the average of the 10 fastest finishers.)
1. Amsterdam 2.07.52
2. Frankfurt 2.09.35
3. Berlin 2.09.38
4. Hamburg 2.09.41
