Janicki, Sakurai Win IAU Trail World Challenge 50 Mile

iau trail world challenge 50 mile at sunmart endurance runsThis year’s Sunmart 50 mile event served as the International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU) Trail World Challenge. Runners representing twelve IAU federations ran side-by-side with the Open field to vie for the overall championship. The men’s winner Jaroslaw Janicki hails from Poland and broke the tape in 6 hours, 7 minutes and 46 seconds. The women’s winner, Norimi Sakurai from Japan, clocked in at 6:34:58 at the 18th Texas Trail Endurance Runs on Saturday.

New World Record in Women’s 100K
Norimi Sakurai of Japan set a new women’s 100K world record Saturday at the Stichting Ultraloop Winschoten in Holland. Her time of 7:00:27 broke the previous record set by American Ann Trason at the same race in 1995. Read more at: [Runnersweb.com]

Japan’s Norimi Sakurai Sets Women’s World 100-K Record

At last Saturday’s Stichting Ultraloop Winschoten in Holland, host of the IAU World Cup 100-K Championships, Norimi Sakurai of Japan came tantalizingly close to breaking the seven hour barrier, recording a new world road record for the distance of 7:00:27.

According to records kept by the Association of Road Racing Statisticians (ARRS), the previous record was 7:00:48 by American Ann Trason set on the same 10 km, ten-loop course in Winschoten back in 1995. Tomoe Abe of Japan ran faster on a point-to-point course in Yubetsu, Japan, in 2000 (6:33:11), but that mark is not recognized as a world record because of the possible aid of wind or gravity.
