Athletes give stocks a lift?

U.S. stock market indexes shot up [yesterday] by as much as 2.4%, a much-needed boost after last week’s steep declines. Predictably, investors cheered.
“With the Fed speaking tomorrow, I thought we would have had a much more modest market - I did not expect this kind of strength,” Doreen Mogavero, president and CEO at Mogavero, Lee & Co., told CNN.com.
While many analysts thought that the fall in oil prices may have been the reason (Brent crude was down $3.58 or nearly 5%), could it be that a group of top athletes, accompanied by officials of the New York Road Runners, who opened the NASDAQ market today, America’s largest electronic stock market, had given the market a lift?
Viktor Roethlin of Switzerland; Hendrick Ramaala of South Africa; Abdi Abdirahman, Peter Gilmore and Alan Culpepper of the USA, and Nina Rillstone of New Zealand officially opened NASDAQ this morning in Times Square with New York Road Runners president and CEO, Mary Wittenberg. Abdirahman “signed in” for the group on the special glass podium.
By the end of today’s trading, the NASDAQ index had risen by 1.44% to 2547.33.

Below is TheFinalSprint.com’s video coverage of Kenya’s Hilda Kibet at the press conference following her victory at the 2007 NYC Half-Marathon on Sunday, Aug 5.
Hilda was able to out-sprint defending champion and fellow Kenyan Catherine Ndereba and Nina Rillstone of New Zealand in the last hundred meters to take the women’s crown. The three elite female runners untimely finished less than one second apart.
As NYRR CEO and President Mary Wittenberg predicted, the NYC Half-Marathon was in many ways Hilda’s “coming out party”.

The New York Road Runners released the elite fields for Sunday’s second annual NYC Half-Marathon presented by NIKE. NOTE: TheFinalSprint.com will feature videos of every pre- and post-race press conference, one-on-one video & audio interviews with top elites, and of course, LIVE coverage of the race itself!)
Led by two-time Olympic gold medalist, Haile Gebrselassie, the men’s field has three athletes who have broken one hour for the half-marathon distance, and a total of 11 men who have run 62:23 or better.
Catherine Ndereba, the 2003 world marathon champion who won the inaugural NYC Half-Marathon last year, headlines the women’s field. She’s just one of seven women who have broken the 71 minute barrier (three have run sub-70 minutes).
Former world marathon record holder, Khalid Khannouchi, was forced to withdraw from the race citing a mechanical problem in his stride which had been causing a burning sensation in the ball of his right foot, race officials reported. He and wife Sandra have flown to Barcelona to see an orthodics specialist.
