NYC Half-Marathon Presented by Nike logoThousands of runners will hit the streets of New York City this Sunday, July 27, at 7:00 AM for the NYC Half Marathon presented by Nike. The 13.1-mile race is expected to be a big hit with distance runners, and with a hefty amount of prize money for the top ten finishers, the event is also sure to draw a few elite athletes to the starting line. In addition to the endorphin high and feeling of accomplishment, top male and female finishers in the Open Division will be able to take home $10,000 each. The race is on the final day of the Runner Experience, a four-day-long festival of fitness held at Niketown.

Dathan Ritzenhein (USA) is expected to be among the top American male finishers as he prepares for the marathon race at the Olympic Games in Beijing, China next month. Ritzenhein has had recent success by finishing 8th place in the men’s 10,000 meter race at the Track & Field Olympic Trials on July 4, and with a half-marathon PR of 1:01:25 set in 2006, this race could very likely provide an opportunity to set a new PR.

nike women's marathon 2007 logo a race to benefit the leukemia & lymphoma society RUN TOGETHERFor the past three years, the Nike Women’s Marathon has brought women together in San Francisco for the world’s largest women’s marathon. This year, Nike is adding a new twist to this already distinctive event — the opportunity for women to run together on the same day for the same cause anywhere in the U.S. by registering for the first ever Nike+ Women’s Half Marathon, through Nikeplus.com.

On October 21, 20,000 participants, up from 15,000 last year, from 50 states and more than 18 countries will descend on the Bay Area to run the Nike Women’s Marathon and Half Marathon benefiting the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Selling out faster than most races of its size - the half marathon selling out in only 10.5 hours and the full marathon in 3.5 days - the Nike Women’s Marathon has become one of the biggest philanthropic contributors among races.

Via a partnership with Team in Training, the marathon raised more than $40 million in its first three years for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society benefiting cancer research and is expecting to exceed the $24 million raised in 2006 for this year’s event, making it Team in Training’s largest beneficiary race in its history.

nike women's marathon logoThe Nike Women’s Marathon in San Francisco sold out in a matter of hours. But now the largest women’s marathon in the world is going online. Women runners around the world can register at nikeplus.com to run “alongside” the 20,000 participants in the Nike Women’s Marathon.

The virtual half marathon is a race without a distinct course, run in any city and tracked by each participant’s own Nike+ system (iPod nano, Nike + iPod Sport Kit and pair of Nike+ shoes). Online participants can run the half marathon any time on October 21 (the same day as the full marathon), but must finish the 13.1 mile run by 11:59 PM HST. As long as each participant successfully runs and syncs 13.1 miles with her Nike+ system on October 21, 2007, she will be considered an official Nike+ Women’s Half Marathon finisher.

Nike+ has also developed an interactive female-specific 12-week virtual training program, designed for those training for the marathons (see www.nikeplus.com/runtogether).
