U.S. stars invade Shanghai

Team USA standouts Tyson Gay, Sanya Richards, Jeremy Wariner, Michelle Perry, Allen Johnson and Lauryn Williams will lead an accomplished group of U.S. stars Friday at the 2007 Shanghai Golden Grand Prix in China.

This third edition of the Golden Grand Prix in Shanghai has been designated as a qualifying event for the IAAF / VTB Bank World Athletics Final 2008. Competing athletes at the meet will have the opportunity to get an early start on qualifying for next year’s final, to be held September 13-14.

Current world and U.S. men’s 100m and 200m champion Tyson Gay will compete in the 100 meters in a field that includes fellow Americans JJ Johnson and Marcus Brunson. The men’s 110m hurdles also should prove interesting as four-time world champion Allen Johnson and 2007 World Outdoor Championships bronze medalist David Payne do battle with world record holder and reigning world and Olympic champion Liu Xiang, who will compete in front of an enthusiastic hometown audience.

Perry poised for hurdles title defense

Defending world champion Michelle Perry leads three Americans into Wednesday’s 100m hurdles final, advancing from Tuesday night’s semis by winning the second heat in 12.55.

Two-time USA outdoor champion Ginnie Powell was fourth in the same heat in 12..67, while USA indoor champion Lolo Jones (Baton Rouge, La.) made the final by placing fourth in Heat 1 in 12.68. Nichole Denby (Champaign, Ill.) fell just one spot short advancing, placing fifth in Heat 1 in a season-best 12.80.

Reigning champion Perry continues dominance in women’s 100m hurdles semi-finals

The Day 4 evening session has kicked off with the women’s 100m hurdle semi-finals.

In the first heat, the favorites were Angela Whyte of Canada and Susanna Kallur, the European champion (12.52 personal record) who recently beat Michelle Perry in the Stockholm Grand Prix. Also competing was Flóra Redoúmi of Greece, Nevin Yanit of Turkey and Jamaica’s Delloreen Ennis-London and Lacena Golding-Clarke. American’s LoLo Jones and Nichole Denby completed the field.

In what was a smooth race, the favorites lived up to their expectations with Kallur winning the heat in 12:64, very closely followed by Whyte (12:65), Ennis-Longon (12:67) and Jones (12:68). In what was a photo finish among the top runners, America’s Nichole Denby was narrowly edged and ultimately came in fifth.

In heat 2, all eyes were on the reigning champion, American Michelle Perry (Pictured above). The heat also featured the United States’ Virginia “Ginnie” Powell, France’s Adrianna Lamalle, Cuba’s Anay Tejeda, Canada’s Perdita Felicien, Australia’s Sally McLellan, and Jamaica’s Vonette Dixon.

Cantwell takes men’s Visa Championship at Indoors

Christian Cantwell put an exclamation point on his indoor season Saturday at the 2007 AT&T USA Indoor Track & Field Championships, held at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center.

The #2 world-ranked shot putter with the farthest throw in the world this year easily won the men’s Visa Championship as the athlete with the top performance of the Indoor Visa Championship Series and the women’s 3,000-meter winner on Saturday, Shalane Flanagan, won the women’s Visa Championship.
