USA Olympic Marathon Team to Run New York Mini 10-K

Kastor Lewy-Boulet Russell top three 2008 USA Olympic Women's Marathon TrialsThey finished 1-2-3 in Boston at the USA Olympic Team Trials - Women’s Marathon last month, and now Deena Kastor, Magdalena Lewy Boulet and Blake Russell will be teaming-up again to compete in the 37th edition of the NYRR New York Mini 10-K. Slated for Saturday, June 7, the “Mini” is the oldest all-women’s road race in the world, founded by Fred Lebow and the New York Road Runners in 1972.

“This is a formidable and very experienced squad with legitimate Olympic medal hopes that all of America should be very proud of,” commented Mary Wittenberg, president and CEO of the New York Road Runners. “Having them all here for the Mini reflects our commitment to America’s top athletes and demonstrates that the road to Beijing continues to run through Central Park for America’s Olympians.”

Kiplagat dominates Mini 10-k

lornah kiplagat winning 2007 nyrr new york women's mini 10kDutchwoman Lornah Kiplagat dominated the 36th annual NYRR New York Women’s Mini 10-K here today, winning for the third consecutive time and her fourth time overall. The “Mini” is the world’s oldest all women’s road race founded by the New York Road Runners in 1972.

Breaking away from the field in the first kilometer, Kiplagat passed the half-way point in 15:39, 25 seconds ahead of the chase pack which included Kim Smith, Mara Yamauchi, Benita Johnson, Hilda Kibet, Silvia Skvortsova, Jelena Prokopcuka and Lydiya Grigoryeva. Although she was slowed by the warm and humid conditions, Kiplagat still finished eight seconds clear of the field in 32:10. She allowed herself to enjoy the victory, slowing to “high-five” spectators in the finish straight.

Three World Champions Set for New York Mini 10-K

Lornah Kiplagat World XC Champs The Final SprintThree world champions –Lornah Kiplagat, Catherine Ndereba and Benita Johnson– will face off at the 36th New York Mini 10-K, the world’s original and oldest all-women’s road race, on Saturday, June 9, organizers announced here today.

Kiplagat, 33, the reigning IAAF World Cross Country and World Road Running champion from the Netherlands, has won the Mini three times, including the last two years. She trails only two legendary five-time Mini champions, Grete Waitz and Tegla Loroupe, for most wins at the event. According to Kiplagat’s husband and manager, Pieter Langerhost, the Mini will be Kiplagat’s only road racing appearance in the United States this year.
