“I got a letterman’s sweater
With a letter in front
I got for football and track
I’m proud to wear it now
When I cruise around
The other parts of the town
I got a decal in back
So be true to your school now
Just like you would to your girl or guy
Be true to your school now
And let your colors fly
Be true to your school”
I did not go to a track meet this afternoon.
This is an unusual situation for me on a Saturday in May. There’s always a meet going on somewhere, and my previous blog wasn’t written under the name of “The Track & Field Superfan” for nothing. But this wasn’t just any Saturday, and not just any track meet that I didn’t attend.
I ran at Bowling Green State University in the early 90s, and while I wasn’t particularly good for a college runner I thoroughly enjoyed taking on the extreme physical challenge of training and competing in the NCAA’s highest division. I liked my experiences in Bowling Green so much, I remained in the town for fifteen years after graduation, only leaving six months ago when my wife’s career took us away. I bled burnt orange and seal brown.

On Monday I posted the men’s dual-meet rankings. Here are the women’s rankings, following the same rules and formats:
#1. Southern Cal
The Trojans beat UCLA, and that’s all they needed to be ranked at the top.
#2. Minnesota
The Golden Gophers won the four-team Pepsi Collegiate Challenge by a single point over Oregon.
#3. Oregon
The Ducks took a narrow second at the Pepsi Challenge, defeating Penn State and Washington. (Next year they are expected to join in the revived men’s dual meet with UCLA.)

Years ago, the dual meet was the cornerstone of the college schedule, with some schools regularly taking part in half a dozen of them per year. Even into the early 80s they were quite common. But when budgets were slashed and team sized plummeted, the dual meet dropped off the radar screen.
The regionals format for outdoor track has taken much of the pressure off in terms of getting an NCAA qualifying mark, and in recent years the meet has seen a bit of a resurgence; a few were even carried on regional cable TV. This past weekend saw the end of the dual-meet season with three rather important matchups (USC vs. UCLA, Washington vs. Washington State, and Arizona vs. Arizona State vs. Northern Arizona).
Recognizing this fact, I’m going to reinstate something Track & Field News once did: National Dual-Meet Rankings. Rules for ranking are as follows.

New York City’s most important collegiate track meet, the New Balance Collegiate Invitational, begins today at the New Balance Track & Field Center at the Armory. It will be the eighth annual edition of this mega-meet which encompasses both high school and university athletes. Teams from over 100 colleges are expected to take part.
The nation’s top middle-distance collegiate runner, Leonel Manzano of the University of Texas, will be opening his 2008 season at this meet, running both the distance medley relay today and the mile tomorrow. “Leo,” as he is known to his friends seemed itchy to get on the fast Armory track again when he spoke to the New York Track Writers luncheon last Monday via telephone from Austin.
