What To Watch: Running & Track Events on TV, Webcast
Posted November 21st, 2008 at 9:47 AM by Jesse Squire
Section: Columns, What To Watch
So far as I’m aware, there are only two events coming up this week. But they’re big ones. As always, times listed are EDT.
NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships
CBS College Sports and NCAA.com, Noon - 1:30 PM Monday (live)
The annual championships will be carried live both on cable and the web starting at noon on Monday. The women’s race (at 12:08 pm) looks to be a runaway by Washington, but the men’s race (at 12:48 pm) is going to be a great showdown between Oregon and Oklahoma State, and Galen Rupp and Samuel Chelanga.
HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel
HBO, 10 PM Tuesday
Former 100 meters World Record holder Tim Montgomery will be interviewed. Montgomery’s record was stripped after he admitted doping under oath in the BALCO affair, and he is facing significant prison time for distribution of heroin and bank fraud. Also, the show revisits the use of marathon training in drug rehab.

6. Garrett Johnson, 32
7. Rutger Smith, 31
8. Ryan Whiting, 28
9. Scott Martin, 28
10. Peter Sack, 26
Hoffa has a slight lead over Cantwell and Nelson, and these three are head and shoulders above the rest of the world. Cantwell missed Sunday’s Prefontaine Classic with an arm injury; in his absence, Nelson won with the second-longest throw of the year.

Men’s Jumps

High Jump
1. Yaroslav Rybakov, 56.5
2. Stefan Holm, 56
3. Andrey Silnov, 49.5
4. Ivan Ukhov, 42
5. Andra Manson, 33

7. Dusty Jonas, 29
8. Kabelo Kgosiemang, 29
9. Linus Thörnblad, 26
10. Kyriakos Ioannou, 23
World Indoor champ Holm and world list leader Rybakov are neck-and-neck. Silnov’s win last Sunday at the Prefontaine Classic tightened his grip on third. As I type this, Nebraska’s Dusty Jonas is competing in the NCAA championships, which would move him into fourth if he wins as expected.

Pat Henry: Texas A&M
Track & Field Head Coach
Posted April 30th, 2008 at 7:35 PM by Jimmie R. Markham
Section: News & Results, Cross Country, Track & Field, Special Features, Interviews, Podcasts, College
On Episode 138 of TheFinalSprint.com Podcast, the most listened to running podcast in North America, I had the distinct privilege of being joined by Pat Henry, the head track & field coach at Texas A&M University.
Before bringing his renowned talents as a coach, recruiter and technician to Texas A&M, Henry spent 17 years at LSU where he built a dynasty that enabled his teams to win 27 NCAA Championships\. Since arriving at College Station four years ago, he has turned the Lady Aggies into a national powerhouse. They have won 3 Big 12 titles in a row, placed 10th in the nation in 2006, 4th in 2007 and have been consistently ranked in the top 3 in 2008. The men’s team was also ranked as high as #1 earlier in 2008.
In the interview, Coach Henry discusses Texas A&M’s development of one of the premier indoor track facilities in the nation and his coaching philosophy. He also contrasts the LSU and Texas A&M teams, his recruiting classes, the supposed rivalry between the Tigers and the Aggies, international recruiting and much more!

Gebrselassie Explains “Sub-Par” Performance
Even though he won by a minute and a half, even though he was well under the hour mark for a half marathon (his winning time was 59:15), even though he ran the 14th fastest half of all time, even though he did it without the benefit of rabbits, Haile Gebrselassie still felt a need to explain what he must consider to be his sub-par performance at the Lisbon Half Marathon, saying, “I tried to push myself for a better performance but I couldn’t do better. It’s a little bit hot, I’m feeling well, but I couldn’t achieve my goal. It’s no excuse, but I’m a little bit worried about my father’s health. I’m in good shape and I can’t tell why I couldn’t run faster.”
