Dobriskey & Willis Take Fifth Avenue Mile Titles

Nick Willis Bernard Lagat 2008 Continental Airlines Fifth Avenue MileBritain’s Lisa Dobriskey and New Zealand’s Nick Willis won the professional races at the 28th Continental Airlines Fifth Avenue Mile here this afternoon.

Dobriskey, who only entered the race last Wednesday, followed the fast early pace of Kenyan Rose Kosgei. San Francisco’s Shannon Rowbury also followed closely. Fourth and seventh in the Olympic 1500m respectively, Dobriskey and Rowbury were able to pull away from Kosgei and battle for the win in the final meters. Dobriskey just got to the line slightly ahead of Rowbury, winning in 4:18.6, the second fastest time in the history of the race. She is the first British women’s champion here since Paula Radcliffe in 1997. Rowbury, who like Dobriskey was making her Fifth Avenue debut, got second in 4:19.2. Kosgei held on for third in 4:23.9.

Great Line-Ups for Sunday’s adidas Track Classic

adidas track classic 2008 logo bannerOrganizers have secured great line-ups for Sunday’s adidas Track Classic at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., and that includes the middle and long distance events.

The men’s 1500m is shaping up to the the top event, led by double world champion and two-time Olympic medalist, Bernard Lagat. Commonwealth Games medalists Nick Willis of Australia and Nate Brannen of Canada are also in the field, along with perennial Canadia star Kevin Sullivan and former NCAA ace Lopez Lomong. Nick Symmonds will be moving up from his usual specialty, the 800m, while 5000m man Adam Goucher will be moving down for a speed workout.

Sub-4:00 mile worth new Mercedes in Cambridge

2007 Mercedes-Benz Classic Mile logo.gifThe winning miler who breaks four minutes on the crushed brick track of Galt Collegiate Institute in Cambridge, Ontario, next month will drive away with a new Mercedes sedan, organizers announced yesterday.

The 2007 Mercedes-Benz Classic Mile, scheduled for Saturday, June 16, is offering a Mercedes B200 sedan should the winner crack the four minute barrier, a feat accomplished two years ago by Kenyan Laban Rotich who established the meet record of 3:58.9.
